How to use remote login?

Hi,
I have iMac and macbook pro.
I want to contact my iMac with my macbook pro from far location.
I want to use the remote login.
I have some questions and I will be happy if you'll be able to help me:
1. can I chose which folder I want to share?
2. can I use remote login when the computer is on sleep mode? (I don't want to erode my iMac hardware).
3. someone use this option? what you think about it? it's safe?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, iMac 27 i3, IPhone 3gs, iPod nano., Mac OS X (10.6.4)

You could also use Screen Sharing and connect from another MAC using a VNC connection - this is similar to LogMeIn without the need for a client to be installed - you only need to forward a port on your router.

You connect by entering a connect to server command in the Finder eg vnc://my.ddnsname.org and login with your local account and your up and running.

Regards,

Billy
