itunes could not sync mail accounts

I have a new iphone 4 with iOS 4.1. On the second day, this is the message I receive:
"itunes cound not sync mail accounts to the iphone because the mail accounts are in use by the iphone close the mail accounts settings on the iphone, then sync again"
All thoughts to rectify this gratefully received!
What does it mean 'close the mail accounts settings on the iphone'?

What that means is "Settings" app is still open in the background because of the iOS4's multi-tasking. To completely close the "Settings":

1. One click on "Home" button (the physical button on bottom) to get back to desktop.
2. Double click "Home" button to reveal most recently opened apps or/and apps that run on the background.
3. Look for "Settings" app. You can swipe left or right to find it if you don't see it.
4. Once you find it, click on "Settings" app and hold for a few seconds until the app shakes.
5. Click on the minus sign inside red circle over "Settings" app. Now you just quit "Settings" app fully.

Sync iPhone again and it should work.
