Folder ? at Startup?

Recently, I have noticed a folder with a question mark (?) briefly appearing as the first image when the machine is starting up. It is possible that it has always done this but I don't think so.

Any ideas?

I solved my own problem - the best way!

The last time I used my external hard drive to backup and use Disk First Aid, I set the Startup Disk to the external. I never set it back so, when starting up, it was searching for the external HD and then defaulting to the internal HD. I reset the Startup Disk in System Preferences and, now, all is well. The folder with "?" does not appear.
