Can receive Emails but won't send - Tesco Mobile Uk

Hi All

just got my new i phone4 and for some reason i can receive emails but not send. I had synced my phone to my virgin media account but it keeps coming up with an error saying the recipient was rejected by the server. It is the correct email address and i dont know how to solve it.

Help would be really appreciated

Hi,

Im going through a similar thing with my iPhone 3G, i can only send email when connected to WiFi at home - if i try to send when im not connected it brings up the same error msg as you are getting.

Im on Tesco Mobile too and my email address is through Virgin media also.

Just spoken to the Tesco Mobile customer service team who have advised me to visit www.selflearning.co.uk/tesco/iphone - i'll be doing this once ive posted this message! If you get a solution before me pplease would you let me know (i'll do the same for you)

To send emails, you either have to send out via the SMTP server of the mobile network you are connected to (i.e. Tesco mobile in your case), or use the SMTP server of your email provider.

Some email accounts (especially those provided free by your ISP) only allow you to send out email when connected to the internet via their internet connection. This is ok if you are connected by WiFi to their network, but not if you are trying to send email out over the mobile phone network.

You'll have to get the Tesco Mobile SMTP server, or see if Virgin Media provide an authenticated SMTP server you can send through when using the mobile network.

This Tesco Mobile FAQ entry should be useful too:

The best option, instead of messing about with SMTP servers for each internet connection you use, is to get an email account which is totally independent of any internet service provider.

I would recommend GMail, as their email accounts work perfectly on the iPhone, have a pre-set Setup option, support "Push" email and will work from absolutely anywhere.

Received this from Tesco Mobile today……

hank you for e-mailing support@tescomobile.com

I am sorry to read of the issues you are experiencing with your Tesco Mobile iPhone and the settings. I can appreciate how frustrating this must be for you.

Following on from Mark’s e-mail regarding the settings for the GPRS and MMS, you will need to set up the e-mail account via our network, with the correct SMTP settings.

Please can you remove whatever e-mail account is already showing under the account section and switch your iPhone off and on. Once you have done this, please can you follow the below processes to try and set up the e-mail account via Tesco Mobile.

Settings
Mail, Contacts, Calendars
Account
Select the account type from the list displayed or the other option
Select ‘Add Mail Account’
Enter the name
Enter the e-mail address and password
Click save

If the account verification fails:

Tap ‘Your Name’ and enter your full name
Tap ‘Address’ and enter full e-mail address
Tap ‘Description’ and enter the description (This is what you wish the account to be called)
Tap either ‘POP’ or ‘IMAP’ on the top bar (Depends on what e-mail provider you are using)
Enter the ‘Host Name’ (You can check this here: http://www.o2.co.uk/ISPsettings)
Enter the username and password for the e-mail account
Enter the smtp host name Smtp.o2.co.uk
Leave the username and password blank
Tap the ‘Save’ option which can be found at the top left hand side of the screen
If a message appears on the screen saying ‘Unable to connect to server using SSL, do you wish to connect to server without SSL, select ‘Yes’)
When this completes tap ‘smtp.o2.co.uk’
If the server setting shows as ‘Off’ then tap it once to switch it to ‘On’
Tap the ‘SMTP’ button in the top left hand corner
Tap the name of your old SMTP setting
If the server settings shows as on then tap it once to switch it to ‘Off’

Once these processes have been followed, your e-mail account to Virgin should be set up correctly. We do support Virgin through the e-mail and so you should not be experiencing any issues.

I hope this information helps and if I can be of any further assistance, please feel free to e-mail me.
