Wobbly picture with ATV2 - anyone else?

ISSUE DOES NOT AFFECT THE FIRST GENERATAION APPLE TV, ONLY ATV2

Unfortunately I don't believe you will have any better luck with the new unit. The problem appears to be with all 2nd Generation ATV's. I took my 1st Generation and plugged it into the same TV this morning and it works fine. I'm guessing that the difference is that the 1st generation has more supported video resolutions??? I know that when I moved it to the Panasonic that had the wavy reception on ATVG2, it worked fine with ATVG1 and automatically switched to 1080i resolution.

ughh! this is so frustrating! i thought maybe it was because i had a cheap $10 hdmi cord from walmart, so i went out and bought a $139.99 cord from The Source (Radio Shack) and still no luck! I really wish apple would have a setting in the menu so we can change the resolution, no reason why they can't! but also when i was buying the cord, i saw they have a $59.99 HDMI to Component switcher, i was thinking maybe that would fix the problem? I have to see, I'll post an update if i buy it... this really isn't good, im surprised apple didn't include a resolution option because not everyone has brand new tv's :S

Just one more thing guys, because I'm a developer I was able to log in and submit this problem as a bug and suggested that they add an option in the settings to lower the resolution like the first gen. Fingers crossed!!

I also got my new Apple TV gen 2 today and hooked it up using the same HDMI cord that I have used for Directv and my laptop to TV. The picture is also wavy.

My tv is a Sony KF-42WE610 LCD HD. It also has a DVI connection & I use an HDMI->DVI connector for the HDMI cord to my TV. The TV specs for the dvi input is that its compliant with EIA-861 standard (whatever that means).

I have not had any wavy pictures streaming youtube via my PC to TV using the same cord.

I also don't have a different TV to check this out.

Thoughts?

I am having this issue as well.
I have a 7 year old 46" Hitachi with DVI and I am getting the wavy picture
as well. Was sooooooo disappointed when I hooked up my new Apple Tv.
I hope Apple issues a fix for this - by providing other resolution outputs.
Perhaps they can just set it up the way the original Apple Tv was.
I'm sure this will work fine on my new 32", but I would prefer to use the 46" for movie watching....

There used to be a remote based way to change the output modes. Doesn't seem to work on the ATV2. Can anyone confirm if there are any other output modes than 720p???

I'm having same problem. Toshiba 46" with a high quality DVI to HDMI cable. Everything is wavy. Roku works just fine. The ATV2 works fine on my other tv (sony 32" with true HDMI).

The toshiba can do 1080i, 720p, etc. so I'm not sure why the ATV is doing this...

Just got ATV2 from store today, half an hour after they came in
Staying at a friends place, so don't know the full details of TV
Panasonic Viera 50" hi def plasma - TH-50PX25, 2004
- connected directly to HDMI with a decentish cable
- really wavy picture, wouldn't watch anything with it like that
- tried different cables and through a HDMI switcher box but still same result

Tried then on small Sony 24" LCD KLV-S22A10 - direct HDMI cable in - picture detected 720p
- picture fairly good, but looking up close there was a small wavy interference across the picture, not as massive as the waves on the other tv
- Not the kind you notice from far away, but up close definitely noticeable
- have not noticed this on other DVD player with same cable - picture detected 1080i

Anyone got any suggestions? Is it faulty and should I return it before I leave YSA for Australia? I don't want to get back and find they cant fix it for me. Perhaps I just wait for apple to update the software on it. How did they not discover this in testing? Surely they sent some out among their employees.

Same with me my tv does 1080i and can do 720p but no dice. I have an apple tech calling me tomorrow so he can do a diagnostic. If nothing works I think I may have to replace this one with an old ATV

Another clue. My tv has a "Picture Size" function. However, when it is receiving a "true" HD signal (720p, 1080i, etc), that function displays "Not Available". For example, with the Tivo, DVD or Roku the function is disabled. With the ATV2, the function is NOT disabled. This seems to imply that the ATV2 is not sending a "true" 720p signal...

I looked at the DVI side of my DVI-HDMI cable and noticed that the middle section of pins is missing. On the off chance that has something to do with it (the apple tv uses additional link?) I ordered a new cable from amazon (a gefen cable which is about $6 with shipping). The new cable appears to include that middle section of pins.

If that fixes the issue I'd be surprised. I'll post here either way.

Ya unfortunately I have to agree with you, it doesn't seem that a hardware replacement is going to fix this, for me I'm going to wait out on a new firmware update to see if they've added a resolution option, if not, well I will take this back and go for the first gen apple tv. It ***** because like others I was so excited to get this and now its a disappointment 😟

I'm on the phone with Apple right now.

The support guy is telling me that DVI-HDMI is NOT a "supported configuration" for the new Apple TV. Even though the video spec for DVI and HDMI are identical and the ATV2 is supposedly outputting a 720p signal.

He is trying to put me in touch with a "senior technical" guy to explain exactly why...

Keep me posted as the Sr. Tech yesterday didn't say that and mine is working fine with HDMI to DVI cable! It was hard to get the ATV started but now it is perfect.
