While trying to burn a DVD-R disk I often but not always have a message "The drive reported a hardwares error: Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR Sense Code = 0x03, 0x01." It happens only when I am burning using Popcorn, never when simply copying using Disco, so it doesn't seem to be a complete failure of the optical drive.
PowerBook G4,
Mac OS X (10.5.8),
Matsushita UJ-825
The update to the newer version of Popcorn did not solve the problem, but as a last resort I read the Roxio documentation on drive errors. The suggestion was to set the write speed to a specific 1x or 2x instead of "best." I set it for 2x, the writing took no longer than it had been doing when it failed, and the write proceeded normally to completion. It had something to do with TS files that needed compressing, not with ones that could be written as is, but in any case it appears to be fixed. Thanks for the inspiration.
