iCal and Gmail sync

I tried to sync my iCal and Gmail a few months ago and it wiped out many years of events off my iCal. I was doing this because i got a Palm Pre Plus smart phone through Verizon and wanted to sync events to my phone calander. I was told I've have to use the cloud. i used the Data Transfer Assistant through Palm and now all my iCal events are on my Gmail calander and my phone calander. but now i want to sync my Gmail and iCal so i can still use ical - but i'm SCARED that it will wipe out my calendar again. anyone know anything about this???
