Unable to open .doc files after upgrade

I am unable to open .doc files after upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard. I am using 08' iWorks, I was able to open them prior to the upgrade. I need some advice so that I can access these files again.

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Two things to do first. Use Software Upgrade to make sure you have the latest release of Pages 08. Then download and install the 10.6.4 Combo Update right over that freshly installed Snow Leopard. That cures most issues like this.

I recently discovered that I had a similar problem as yours. For no obvious reason I suddenly found I could not open .doc attachments. It was not immediately crucial since I could open them in Pages09. But it transpired that I was also unable to open Word (in MS Office for Mac 2004 which I had bought because MathType was not compatible with the then version of iWork)

The eventual solution was to reinstall the MS Office for Mac software. All of it - not just the Word component because that did not do the trick.

Hence my suggestion. Try reinstalling the software which contains Word.
