Netflix Audio/Video Out of Sync

My new AppleTV arrived today (yay!) and I quickly set-up and configured it. While generally impressed I'm observing that the audio and video for Netflix streaming are not synching up properly. I've got the ATV hardwired to my network and am not connecting via wireless.

I have both the HDMI and optical cables plugged in I've tried audio over both interfaces and with the ATV setting for "Digital Out" set to on and off and all variations have the same synch issue.

I've tested the same show with the Netflix app on my iPhone (over wifi) and using the OSX Silverlight player (hardwired) which both synch the audio/video properly.

Anyone else experiencing this? Did you find a solution?

Could be the Netflix app/movie encoding or processing lag on your TV vs audio output on a receiver assuming audio not being played on TV.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried both directly from the ATV to the TV over HDMI and also with the audio via optical to the AV receiver. I've not got a receiver new enough to run HDMI through it. 🙂

What leads me to suspect something about the new ATV and it's Netflix implementation is that I've used a MacBook Pro with both the TV and AV receiver to view Netflix via the Silverlight player with no issues.

I had the same audio/video sync problem with the new AppleTV (hardwired ethernet, HDMI). I switched over to the XBOX to finish watching my show. Hopefully they'll have a software patch soon.

I am encountering the same syncing issues with Netflix. Connected with ethernet and HDMI. Netflix on the wii and the roku over wireless have no problems.

I too have audio sync issues when streaming Netflix movies. I have my AppleTV hardwired with comcast "extreme" internet speeds and HDMI connection to TV (it is not a connection/speed issue). Hope this gets resolved quickly for it is annoying.

I have seen the sync issue but only if I FF when beginning a movie.

If I select a movie and play it from the beginning, no sync issue.

I can detect audio/video out of sync when straming from my home library too. I don't think it is unique to Netflix.

add PS3 and Wii, and PC on my side. The audiosync issue, in my experience is unique to the Apple TV, except for some marginal quality titles. Sadly we've seen some issues on the PS3 with some BBC titles (second season of Dr. Who)

In my quick survey last night, of 6 or 7 titles tried, only a single was reasonably in sync.

I have just bought the ATV today same issue audio sync out to video after 10-15 mins. Apple should have tested this before release, an obvious issue. Takes me back to when dvd's where first released and the first dvd players could not hold sync.

For me its even normal Quicktime files, that play normal on other Mac stuff.

First antennagate, now AUDIOGATE.

Also Subtitles,

if more than 2 lines, one line is off the screen, Quicktime movies with encoded subtitles.

I have the same problem with Apple TV and Netflix. It happens when I play the television programs. About 80% of the TV programs I try have this problem. Very annoying. Any suggestions??

I haven't seen any audio sync issues but I would like to drop a suggestion for those affected by this. I believe most televisions now now have a setting to compensate for this. (Well at least I know my Vizio 37" does.) My television has a setting (unique for each input) called lip sync and it's for correcting exactly this issue. Initially it's a feature for correcting out of sync problems between the television and satellite receivers which is actually a common problem. Most modern televisions should have a similar feature for fixing audio sync features. Doesn't hurt to dive into your televisions settings to see if you can correct your audio sync issue.

Yes, you are correct. My Onkyo 808 receiver allows me to adjust the audio up to a 250ms correction. Sometimes this is ok, but I've found some shows that are off by as much as 500ms. And, it is not a set value. I varies from show to show.

I've noticed that some older shows on netflix (ie. Newsradio) have this problem on ATV but work fine on my Tivo and Roku.

I've not experienced it on anything I've rented or played off of itunes.

The audio delay is 500ms plus.
