Rosetta Stone/Internal Mic not working

I have recently installed Rosetta Stone Version 3 (language software) on my Macbook Pro. I am having issues using the internal microphone with the software.

When I setup the microphone within the software and then do the test (say 1,2,3,4,5 into the microphone as a test), the program tells me everything is working fine. However, during the lessons, when speech recognition is necessary, the microphone doesn't work.

Firstly, the speaker will say a work, then when it's my turn, it's as if the microphone is not being recognized and is quickly turning on and off as if it's trying to hear something. Secondly, every time the microphone is enabled and disabled, it turns up the microphone input volume (System Preferences > Sound > Input > sliding bar with low to high) one tick until it's at the top of the bar; thus rendering the microphone useless due to an overload of ambient noise.

Any suggestions or tips? I know Mac users must have this working. However, all the info I can find is a bunch of frustrated Mac people and a lot of finger pointing between Apple and Rosetta Stone.

I now have a similiar problem (exactly the same problem really) with RS after upgrading to Mavericks. Were you ever able to resolve this? I made it to second level support but they couldn't fix it, thought their drivers might need to be upgraded but did not think it was going to happen.


Their workaround was to boot off my old mountain lion partition, and run the old system.

I was having the same problem. I have used Rosetta Stone in the past on a different laptop without a headset; so I knew it could be done with my new one. The Rosetta Stone Online Classroom program would recognize that I had a microphone but would not set it up. The internal mic worked fine in sound recorder and with other programs. It turned out that the problem was with the web browser itself. If you are using Google Chrome you may need to change your privacy settings. Go to settings --> Advanced Settings --> Privacy --> Media. Scroll down in this menu to find your default settings for camera and microphone. Change them to ask when requested. Relaunch Rosetta Stone. Try to set up your microphone in Rosetta Stone again. When you do; you will be prompted to allow access. Allow. After this, I was able to set up my microphone and utilize it in the lessons.🙂 I hope this helps.


P.S. If your microphone does not show up in the list of devices; you will need to change its name to include the word microphone if it does not already.

I have had the same issue. Hours talking to Rosetta Techs and we always seem to fix it temporarily. I have done everything listed in all the former replies. Here is what worked for me every time.


Log out other users on you computer.


If I start up the iMac and log in my wife (which I traditionally do), the sound will not take input from headset or internal speakers. With her logged in, does not work, log her out and I am up again. Do not know why, don't care, but it absolutely works.

I had an issue with a school/web-based Rosetta Stone not showing any options at all for microphones, whether internal or external. I tried deselecting "use ambient noise reduction" and selecting Line Input in the Settings of my Mac, but that didn't help either. Then I found a solution that worked perfectly:


(I was only allowed to do this once, and did not take screenshots or write anything down, so I apologize for how vague the following may sound). When I was on the Rosetta Stone menu, I tried Right Clicking on the empty option menu, and selected "Settings..." from the popup. It brought up a little box with tabs at the bottom. I went to the second (or third, I can't remember) tab, and selected "(something) microphone." A popup appeared asking me to allow Rosetta Stone to access my internal mic and speakers. I selected "yes," and suddenly the options appeared on the list in Rosetta Stone. I selected "Internal Microphone," and tested, and it worked.


I hope this might help someone else who has the same problem. I'm sorry it sounds vague, but I can't seem to repeat the process. It was on a whim. Try right clicking the empty box if no selection appears, and then playing with the settings a little. It worked for me.

I found an easy solution for the online version. I clicked on the blank screen where it said to choose my mic (which looked blank) and an Adobe box popped up. I checked the box that said let Adobe use the microphone. Then I got a pop up from Rosetta asking permission to use the mic and camera. I clicked yes and then all of the possible mics came up in the window. It found the internal mic as well as the USB mic. I'm guessing that somewhere way back I worried about Adobe looking into my room and said it can never use my mic and/or camera. I'm using OS x Yosemite on an old IMAC.


Hope this helps someone else since I didn't have to use any apps, etc..
