Problem streaming HD Movies to Apple TV through home network

Got my new Apple TV yesterday but has some quirks. The biggest one is I'm in the middle of watching an iTunes HD movie I own -- streaming it to my Apple TV on my home network -- and the video starts stuttering halfway through the movie. It was playing with no sound, the video was jumpy, etc.

I stopped the movie, unplugged the Apple TV, tried playing the movie again -- I did this a couple of times -- and same result. This issue didn't happen until about an hour into the movie -- for the first hour of the show it played perfectly. Just before the movie, I'd watched an HD TV show I downloaded from iTunes earlier in the day, and was streaming this to my new Apple TV over the home network, and it played fine.

The other issue I'm seeing is it takes a looooooooooong time to load my iTunes Library from my computer. I selected my shared library, and then it takes about five times (or more) as long to load the list of movies compared to my older Apple TV (the previous generation 160GB hard drive model).

Is anyone else seeing these issues, and is there a fix?

molinafamily1 - thanks very much, this had been so annoying. The simple step of turning off Dolby Digital in ATV2 and it now all works a treat. What used to take up to half an hour to buffer (or not at all), now buffers in 1 min or so!

As an aside, I use a wired connection via home plugs and not wi-fi but I still had the same issue of slow streaming from my iMac until trying out the Dolby Digital setting.

This worked for me also. I nave the newest apple tv. Bought it today. Streaming wirelessly to tv and was having major streaming problems. It kept stopping and buffering every few minutes.

I was watching an HD version of 24. It would happen on any HD episode. I tried turning off the "Dolby digital" in the apple tv settings and alas, not a single problem.

I can now watch an entire show with out it stopping and pausing to download more info. Thanks, molinafamily1!!!

Folks,

I''m also having the same exact problem with my Apple TV 2 (w/ latest updates for Itunes, Apple TV, and IOS) and streaming HD movies on my Samsung Plasma TV (ATV 2 connected via HDMI and using the highest speed internet service by AT&T Uverse service). Buffering time is ridiculously slow and it has nothing to do with my Internet connection, which is great. I did call Apple Support (as an exception case) to report this issue. Since I told them it was a firmware issue, they give me complimentary support on this ( I don't have Apple Care). I think the best thing you can do is report this issue so that it is escalated to their engineering folks and we have a firmware update asap. You can search for the Apple support link on this discussion board or get to it from here: http://support.apple.com/

In the meantime, I've switched to SD mode (under Settings>> Itunes Store) in ATV2, and also Dolby Digital Off, per comments made by others in this discussion board.

Good luck.

Guys, Guys, Guys.

Your problem is most likely your Router and it is a simple fix.

If you are using a third party Router, the default settings in the Router are geared up to work with Windows and it's various substandard media systems. Sadly, most router manufactures have never heard of Apple, let alone Apple TV, so you need to make the introduction, on Apples behalf. Allow them to shake hands or kiss or whatever.

Now, Apple TV really hates QOS packets and Windows Multi Media. Apple TV hates it so much that if you fire this kind of data at it, it retaliates by not buffering. Rather than torturing your Apple TV box with QOS and then wondering why it hates you, go into your router set up and disasble QOS and WMM. From that point on, your Apple TV will become a loyal and reliable companion. Thus forth, you will all live happily ever after.

Nice try but fraid not. This only addresses a fraction of the problems I and others are experiencing.

For example I've completely removed the router from my network as a test. My router is an Airport Extreme 7.6.1 firmware btw.

Anyway, with IP addresses manually assigned, my AppleTV still barfs just trying to stream media from my MacMini media server. :-(

If the AppleTV tries to play an HD movie located on one of my homesharing computers, it gives me crap about my computer not being authorized when it darn sure is. If I try to play the movie between computers using homesharing I get the stalling others have also complained about.

iTunes had issues and the new Apple TV has issues. Big sloppy annoying ones.

So now that i have read this entire thread, i am no closer to an answer then when I started. My issue is as many describe my world was spinning well until the update.

* my first version spins up fast, but its not requesting hd video

*my 5 ATV v2 work flawless most of the time with all SD/HD when requesting the media from my itunes account Cloud 100meg internet connection speed

*all ATV pucks running on a wireless connection Netgear AC/N router

* all airplay, 4 iphones, 3 ipads interface without issue

*HD media requested from my home based Itunes server running Win 7 endless hours before it plays

Please forgive me if I missed something obvious in the previous posts, "wouldnt be the first time!"

Thanks!
