Does airplay work with DVD player on Mac?

It would be pretty typical of Apple though......

I'm quite impressed with the pessimism on this post! What you all are missing is that it isn't going to be an "airplay" feature as much as straight up mirroring of whatever is on your computer to show up on the TV as well! You can stream yourself skyping if you want. You can play a hacked game of Minesweeper through a homemade web browser. If it is on your computer screen, it will be on the TV. The iPad already does this and does it quite nicely! Cheer up folks and have some faith post-Steve Jobs; they have a lot to prove at Apple and the latest iPad can't possibly be the knock out of the park they desperately need to keep Apple Fanboyism alive and thriving.

No I realize it will be wireless mirror, Airplay is simply a brand. I also realise that the ATV is capable of more than Apple allows. I am fan of tinkering with electronics

Download the software from Airfoil. It works great for this. I can feed pandora or any other internet radio station to ATV from my laptop and Safari or any browser.

It looks to me as though 3rd party software may fill the gap where Apple are letting current and older OS X users down.

You may be able to feed Pandora, but can you feed DVDs to the AppleTV with Airfoil?

I.e. can you run the DVD Player application from Apple or VideoLan Client and will Airfoil broadcast the DVD to the TV over the AppleTV?

Wow. I had higher expectations for Mountain Lion's Airplay. So far it's been a neat toy to play with and that is all. ATV is falling behind ROKU as far as content goes, as well (even with the brand spakin' new addition of HuluPlus). The Mac DVD Player to ATV would have been amazing, but it really only seems that Airplay is nothing more than a "cheap" [read expensive] parlor trick.

The fact of the matter is that you still can't play a DVD on your MacBook (no matter how new it is - mine was purchased April 2012) and air play what is on your screen to the apple TV. It shows grey and white checker boxes which is so stupid. So instead of just watching the DVD that I rented, I am being forced to rip it to my hard drive and then play it. Pretty stupid if all of this is due to licensing issues. It takes forever to rip the movies. As normal, Apple makes you use 3rd party software to accomplish the end means - which is simply to watch the movie I rented. Pretty disappointing....

Try Airparrot. No ripping required. Ripping is illegal anyway.

I don't think Airparrot works with DVD player either.

I have just discovered this issue. VLC works but is a poor workaround. I will certainly advise anyone to avoid buying the Airplay device.

Have you had issues with VLC ?

VLC would allow the DVD to be played, but playback was at best choppy and often stalled for several seconds. Made viewing unpleasant.

Good to know in order to advise users accordingly.
