Does airplay work with DVD player on Mac?
Pretty simple question. Can I play a DVD on my Mac and have it stream to my apple TV?
MBP, iMac Al, iPhone 3gs, 10.6
No. But I kinda hope it does someday. :/

that's the only thing keeping me from buying an apple tv. I still have way too many dvds...

I won't (hold my breath)! I have a macmini in my living room anyway, but don't deny it would be nice to replace it with the apple tv for the sake of its goodies (specially the airplay stuff).
the itunes movie store in germany is quite bad anyway, as most of its titles only have german audio track.
guess i'll have to keep my setup as it is.

Lion is getting lots of iOS features, but even in the meantime it would seem like a horrible waste of a great technology to NOT update the stock DVD Player app with an AirPlay capability.
Agreed with others -- I bought an Apple TV, but my biggest gripe so far (other than lack of Hulu) is that I've got a shelf of DVDs I can't play on it. A relatively minor software update to DVD player could do this immediately, so your Mac Mini / MacBook / etc doesn't go to waste.
Another possibility is that when Apple opens up the AirPlay API (as promised in Steve's recent email, for 2011), existing DVD players (both dedicated and software) could support AirPlay and accomplish the same task.

Fretting over Hulu is probably pointless, the writing is on the wall.

This is my no.1 beef with the Apple TV 2 and something that needs addressing, either by Apple or by a 3rd party. Even so, I'm not going to be happy if I have to pay a 3rd party for an Airplay-enabled DVD player app when it's something Apple should've taken care of the minute the ATV was announced.
Nyrius NAVS500 HD 1080p has a 30 foot range, and if you have an HDMI capable Mac, or audio to HDMI adapter that combines video, you can send any Mac within 30 feet to the TV, and play DVDs that way wirelessly. It took a bit of setting up. At one point the DVD Player said it wouldn't recognize the graphics chip on my Mac Mini 2010, but I finally got it to work.
The video format on a DVD is MPEG2 which is not one of the formats that an Apple TV plays.
MPEG-2 does playback on AppleTV but only if H.264 is encoded on it. DVDs though because of the movie industry is prevented from being encoded legally with another format. Thus we can't discuss how to do so here.
The answer to that now is yes. Mountain Lion (the next release after regular Lion) OS X is going to have that feature. See the release notes from Apple here:

It is definitely about time! I love my Apple TV and this is the main reason I bought it in the first place (and severely disappointed myself). Get ready to ditch those DVD players, folks!
I'll believe it when I see it actually work. Let's hope this isn't one of those features they suggest they might have, only to drop later. And we still don't know the hardware requirements of Mountain Lion.
Even if Airplay arrives on OS X, there's no guarantee you'll be able to stream DVDs.
The Hardware requirement aren't set yet but it look like anything older 2008 going to get left out 😟. Fairly typical of Apple MO
