HDMI Handshake problems every 20 - 30 minutes - Color Inversion Issue

Thought I would give you an update now that I've had the ATV3 for a week.

The disapointing news is, the problem still persists.

The positive news is that it's nowhere near as bad as it was.

The flicker occurs maybe once an hour and instead of constantly and instead of blinking on and off three times in quick succession it does it once and settles down again.

It's still annoying when it happens, but it doesn't completly ruin the viewing experinece like it does with the ATV2.

I've moved my ATV2 to the Samsung TV in the bedroom (which doesn't suffer the problem at all) and will keep the ATV3 with the Sony in the living room.

If it had been as bad as the ATV2, I would definitely taken it back to Apple for a refund but I don't think it warrants it.

Friend of mine just bought a mac mini with one of the intel HD videocards.

Problem is still there on the 47PFL9664 Philips TV, so both the Raedon and the Intel videocard suffer from this issue

Apple closed my bugreport last Feb, blaming Philips.

Highlights on what engineering at Apple found:

'Engineering has determined that this issue originates outside the drivers.'

'It looks like the particular TV model is faulty - 47PFL9664 TV set is bad.'

'We do not see anything in this bug for drivers to do.'

'Please contact the application developers regarding this issue to help alert them of its importance.'

Only solution so far that I found was using a HDMI to RGB converter box and then use the YCbCr connectors on the TV, it'll get you 1080p output though image quality is somewhat less.

This "bad set" story would sound right if I would not have two different MBPs (15" and 17") and using 15" MBP (2011) connected to Philips TV I have this "Color inversion" phenomenon, however if I use 17" (2010) I have never had it. Both my MBPs are running the same 10.7.4 OS X version, very similar software setup.

Hello... I have this TV and the same problem with my ATV2. I also cannot connect any laptop to it, without the colour inverting intermittently. Sony say its the fault of all my devices.. most of whic wont let me change settings on them. Have you had any trouble with other devices? Did you solve this isssue?? Ta! Michelle x

Irish Tom - Like you and Nbren I have the KDL37S5500, and it will not play any device withough flashing or colour inverting. I have been to sony, who tell me I must change the settings on all of the devices that get connect ed to the tv. SO far no one has seen a device work with the TV. Every other TV is fine. I have ATV2, Toshiba P300 and HP G61.. The laptops dont seem to let me change the settings. I have complained to Sony that its not fit for purpose if so many devices made around the same time have to be changed. I am now writing to the retailer to see if I can get a better result. Sony have had the set 5 months!

It's a compatibility issue between Apple Quicktime player software and some TV sets from Philips and Sony. So, you will have exactly the same problem from any Apple device until they fix the software.

I've experienced this problem from iTunes playing movies from a DELL Windows PC and from my ATV2, both connected to my Philips TV by HDMI. I've read the same problem from people using different Mac computers but always a Philips or Sony TV.

For me, the problem has become less and less important every time a new ATV2 software update has been released, but never disappeared totally.

Currently my problems between ATV2 and Philips 37PFL9604H are:

- There is a flicker (the screen turns to black for 2-4 seconds) that ir completely random. It can happen once an hour or it can hapen every minute. It's more likely to happen when I'm playing videos using Airplay from my iPad.

- The color inversion appears randomly when I select ATV2 as input source, but now it reverts in a few seconds and never happens while playing (before it did).

I hope Apple didn't close this as a technical issue for them to solve.

I have a brand new Apple TV. Everything has a greenish tinge to it. Naturally I tried adjusting the settings on the Pioneer plasma (quite old but no issues with TV or DVD playing on other channels). Have reset the ATV but problem persists.

The trick for Lion is also working for Snow Leopard in combination with Philips television.. No strange screens anymore!! Woohoo!

PhilipsPFL5404 losing HDMI video and audio every now and then (between 20 minutes and 2 hourse) with a brand new Playstation3.

It seems that Philips TVs have something really bad in their HDMI.

This solved the problem on my new Mac Mini with my Philips TV 40PFL9704 HDMI 1.3.

I have it 'repaired' by AMac, but they did not solve the problem.

Why did the Apple helpdesk not tell me that it is just adding a color scheme.

Here's my experience.

apple tv 2 plugged into panasonic LCD tv. loses power and apple tv signal every so often (between ever 20 mins and every 2 hours) same issue on another panasonic tv i have. have changed the dmi input and the cable, same issue remains. apple changed my apple tv no progress on the issue.

i also have an apple tv 3 connected to an onkyo av amp. exactly the same problem as above.

I successfully got a replacement TV from Sony, after months of proving to them that it was actually the TV and not the devices. 🙂

We tried every single technical solution possible and finally solved the problem. This may sound crazy, but place a bag of frozen peas on the unit while it's playing. Of course, make sure you have something that absorbs the moisture. We tried everything and believe it or not, this works!

I found that going to Settings > Audio & Video > HDMI Output and change it from Auto to RGB High.
