Q: HDMI Handshake problems every 20 - 30 minutes - Color Inversion Issue

Dear all,

I used the old ATV for a long time and never had problems with it. Yesterday my new ATV 2 arrived. The setup was very easy but after a few minutes a problem with HDMI Handshake occurred and repeats at least every 20-30 minutes:

I get a green screen for one or two seconds and then the picture appears again with some kind of inverted colors.

I use a Philips 40 inch 7664 LED LCD with the newest firmware installed.

Any idea what I could to to fix this issue?

Thanks

You are absolutely right. HDMI has its own specifications, and there are no problem whatsoever for devices that respect those... It is Apple's responsibility.

    Same here.

Got my ATV2 yesterday. Its hooked up to a Sony KDL32ex402 with brand new firmware. Connected via Wifi, no optical audio.
Right now Im replacing the HDMI cable but Im not that hopeful...

Feels like the iPhone OS 3.1 issue about a year ago. Please, Apple, fix it.

Why would swapping the HDMI cable affect the Optical Audio?
Have you been into Audio settings and switched the digital output to on?
    Bob.

.........unless you mean that you haven't connected the optical output (I read this as you couldn't get the optical output to work)

Out of interest is everyone here streaming content over wi-fi or are some people connected via ethernet? I wonder if this changes anything? I might try tonight. I've tried everything else!

Have exactly the same problem with the 2nd gen Apple TV and Philips 56PFL9954H. 1st gen Apple TV worked fine in exactly the same setup.

When I send the ATV to sleep and restart it, all is normal again.

When doing nothing, it usually fixes itself after a few minutes, but that is of course no option when watching a movie.

I hope that Apple at least acknowledges the problem and tells us if it can / will be fixed with a firmware update.
Having to send the Apple TV to sleep several times during a show or a movie is so annoying, I think I'll opt for returning it otherwise.

I received my ATV2 several days ago and have it connected to a Philips 32PFL3514D. I've run Netflix movies for two days almost non-stop and so far no problems.

This is the same LCD in which I have had magenta/pink screen when connected via hdmi to a DirecTV HR22 box. Now I am using the same hdmi cable for the ATV2 with no issues.

I updated the firmware on my TV, I tried to change the screen settings etc to no avail. There is no way that a brand new product should work this badly, you should not have to sleep it of change connections it should just work. When they had problems with the Iphone4 it was on the news and they promised a fix......no joy here.I just can't believe Apple have not had the courtesy to even return my email asking for help and advise.

I have taken mine back now and had a refund. They weren't even bothered when I took it back, they just said "oh well that is a shame, sorry about that".

I have always been an apple fan and love their products but this is a ridiculous situation which they must know the answer to. All other hardware works on my TV so it must me a programming issue.......

Same problem here, using a 9-month-old Philips LCD TV. I have updated the TV's software, everything's connected right, and still it happens - greeny-blue screen after about 30 minutes use. Sometimes it reverts to normal in a few seconds, sometimes not.

I bought ATV in London last week, and took it home to Sweden, so I've been talking to Sweden Apple support staff. I was the first caller they'd had with ATV2 problems, and they had nothing to suggest other than the usual 'turn it off, disconnect it, reconnect it, turn it back on'.

Incidentally, am I being completely stupid, or is there really no volume control function on the remote that ships with ATV2?

There is no volume control, correct. You can program ATV to use your TV remote.

I have a cheap HDMI switch from ebay (Mini HDMI AUTO SWITCH 1080P 1.3b 3 Port Hub Switcher @ £4.99 buy it now)
If I put it in between Apple TV2 and the TV (Philips PFL 9664) it cures the problem.

I will give this a go with my Sony Bravia, cannot be bothered waiting for a firmware fix.

Any idea why this would make a difference ?, I cannot see any power source to boost the signal.
