Q: HDMI Handshake problems every 20 - 30 minutes - Color Inversion Issue

Dear all,

I used the old ATV for a long time and never had problems with it. Yesterday my new ATV 2 arrived. The setup was very easy but after a few minutes a problem with HDMI Handshake occurred and repeats at least every 20-30 minutes:

I get a green screen for one or two seconds and then the picture appears again with some kind of inverted colors.

I use a Philips 40 inch 7664 LED LCD with the newest firmware installed.

Any idea what I could to to fix this issue?

Thanks

Hey Apple, if anyone is monitoring this forum you really need to get moving on this issue. If you are working on a fix please communicate this to your users. As far as most of us are aware you haven't even acknowledged anything is wrong.

I've more updates to this over the weekend. We tried watching something we'd rented through the downloadable ATV movies, and couldn't watch it because this problem happened so regularly. We also tried to stream a movie from itunes on our mac book, which streamed beautifully and in great definition, but still the problem occured. This is so frustrating.

And the more I think about it, the more the "standard" response from Apple just isn't good enough. While the person I spoke to was friendly and helpful and acknowledged that this is a known issue, saying "a fix is on its way but we don't know when" is just poor customer services.

There is no warning that the ATV2 may not be compatible with loads of mainstream tvs. And if the problem really were with the TV, why do none of my other HDMI connected appliances have any problems? So I think Apple need to send us a message, let us know how long it'll take, and get it sorted!

A lot of people on here are, like me, customers who have everything Apple. At home and my business, between my partner and I, we have a Macbook, 2 iMacs, 2 iPhone 4s, 2 airport expresses, a Time Capsule, and all the other accessories which we've bought through apple as well as this ATV, and looking at the profiles of people on here, loads of people own significant amounts of Apple kit. So you'd think that Apple would pay attention to loyal customers and do something to sort it out. I'm pretty disappointed right now, to be honest.

I rang Apple support last week and after explaining my problem in detail to the operator she realized she couldn't help me and I was put through to an Apple TV product specialist. It appears the issue with Philips TVs was recorded on the 11 October and the last update was the 3rd November to say no progress had been made but that the issue had been moved to Copertino. They wanted my TV model number and the attitude seemed to be, we know there is a problem but we cant pin it down.

If you have this problem dont just read about it here please ring Apple Support, give them the details of what is happening and what TV you have. Otherwise I fear they may just ignore it and blame Philips saying it just impacts a small handful of users.

Just as the previous poster pointed out, if you experience this issue please call Apple and let them know about it! Give them as much infos on your TV as well, so that the engineers can find out what's causing this! Thanks guys!

    Hi I'm the next one.
Having the problems described in this discussion I talked to Apple Support yesterday (very kind and aware of the problem). The Apple TV specialist told me that the issue appears on certain Philips and Sony devices. The Apple engineers are working on a solutions and they will keep me up to date, if I get any information I will post it here.
When the problem appears I get Apple TV back to proper work for a while this way: Disconnect the HDMI cable and connect it again, or change the input source on your TV from Apple TV to TV or something else and then back to Apple TV. It sometimes works for up to two hours after one of these procedures. I know, it's not a solution but it helps by watching until Apple comes around with the solution.
    My configuration:
    Apple TV2
    Philips LCD: 47PFL7864H /12
    Firmware Q5481-0.26.78.0
    Release for TV543
    Generation Date 9/07/2010 11:22:14

I am almost sure it is RGB/YUV issue as explained earlier. The same exact symptoms with my PC connected to the same TV via HDMI. As far as the PC is concerned the solution was simple, though - I changed ATI color space in driver settings from YUV to RGB.

And old Apple TV had this setting, too! I'm afraid if Apple does not bring back this setting to the new Apple TV the problem will last forever

Hi everybody, I've already posted this problem to the german Computerhilfen forum (http://www.computerhilfen.de/hilfen-12-351790-0.html) and uploaded 2 screenshots from the Apple TV menu with normal and "green" color (http://www.computerhilfen.de/screens/3/0/screenshots/Apple-TV-Colour-Problem) but I guess you all know what it looks like

Connected TV is a Philips, there is no optical audio. I will try another HDMI cable and deactivate the HDMI control on the Philips TV later this day - maybe that'll help?

    Hello Guys,

i have a problem with the ATV2 too! I have a Medion 30045 37" Flatscreen wich is HD-Ready. My Problem is: I can get NO SIGNAL! First I testet the ATV and nothing works. I thought it was deliverd broken, but a test at the apple store told me its ok. Than, with a HDMI-Cable from Appleit worked after 100 test of plugging and unplugging the Cable for 2 Days. Now .. nothing works. The ATV starts and i can see the Apple ... then the Signal gets lost. Plugging and unplugging doesnt work ... i try this for 2 Weeks now! Different HDMI-Cables doesnt fix the problem ... i am tired of the new ATV!

Getting very frustrated with this now. The apple tv is a good idea but flawed.

I have had to reset the system every 15 minutes in the last two hours... even windows 95 would stay up longer than that !

I`ll give it another week, then its going back.

Same here in Spain. Sony KDL-32s5600 with the latest firmware version (M5.163)

Added to the spotty movie download process... Seems to be a complete turn so far. Very fiddly product, and supposedly for my parents.
