Q: HDMI Handshake problems every 20 - 30 minutes - Color Inversion Issue

Dear all,

I used the old ATV for a long time and never had problems with it. Yesterday my new ATV 2 arrived. The setup was very easy but after a few minutes a problem with HDMI Handshake occurred and repeats at least every 20-30 minutes:

I get a green screen for one or two seconds and then the picture appears again with some kind of inverted colors.

I use a Philips 40 inch 7664 LED LCD with the newest firmware installed.

Any idea what I could to to fix this issue?

Thanks

Having the same problems here, with Philips TV. No other issues, just with the ATV2.

Even with Apple it's possible for something like this to happen. They simply cannot make everything 100% correct the first time. But I think it's horrible that they didn't correct it in this new version of iOS. They should make this a high priority issue, because else at least they will be getting mine back!

(although I love it when it works).

don't get me wrong, I love mine too, but this is a real issue, 3 or 4 times per film and at least once in a single 30 minute tv show.

Its not like Sony or Phillips ar "unknown" brands, they should be part of basic testing for Apple when releasing a device like this.

I just spoke to Apple support engineers earlier today asking them why the fix was not included in yesterday's ATV2 software upgrade. Previously they explained me that it would most likely be fixed through a software upgrade. Well we have all learned by now that this did not work.

Contrary to Bachmaier's support staff experience, in NL they seem to be perfectly aware of this issue at Apple Support. However they have no clue on how and when this will be fixed.....just keep waiting......

They should update their store site to say: This product will have extra features on Sony, Philips, and Panasonic HDTVs: Free psychedelic effects ... every now and then

Actually I returned the unit because I suspect a hardware problem, not solvable through firmware.

We are not speaking about an ordinary interconnection interface here, but HDMI with HDCP. HDMI with HDCP is the product of the idiots of the media industry, mandating encryption in the digital link between a player and a TV set. An insane thing. Such complexity can and does lead to incompatibility and reliability problems.

I suspect that the chips involved on the HDCP and HDMI handshake are "black boxes" and we are not talking about a simple problem in the Apple firmware, but a chip issue.

Just an educated guess, but... I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a hardware exchange program to solve this. Just in case I returned it. I will gladly buy one if I can be sure that all the issues have been nailed. If the problem hasn't been solved in a month... looks bad.

I updated to 4.1 last night. No resolution or funky color issues at all so far. I used my Apple TV for about 3 hours total since the update. I too have a Sony TV.

    Here’s my details:
    TV: Sony KDL52XBR4
    AVR: Pioneer Elite - VSX-84TXSi
Connection: HDMI daisy-chain. ATV --> AVR --> TV

I have my AVR set to up-convert ATV to 1080i. (I confirmed ATV is sending 720P via the menu)

I just wanted to provide my info incase it helps.

Is there any chance this issue is related to firmware in the televisions? Or perhaps bad cables? It does seem odd that it primarily affects Sony and Philips televisions. I have a 2nd Gen Apple TV attached to a Sony 40" LCD that is a couple of years old. I upgraded my Apple TV last night and had NO issues before or after.

its not related to the Sony TV, I even updated the firmware last night be be 100% sure.

    I've currently got,
a HDMI sat box, works fine
a HDMI dvd player works fine
    a HDMI console works fine
a 1st gen ATV via HDMI works fine

Changed all the cables around too to be sure.

a new black ATV2, breaks every 20 mins.

Glad you got lucky Walter, but for the rest of us, IT *****

I've NEVER had an issue before.

Today I sent back the atv2 that I ordered to connect it to the tv Set in the bedroom. My Annotation, that I send it back because of the HDMI hanshake probles seemed not to Impressum the service agent. To me it Sems Apple does not really pay too much attention to the problem.

I have been following this discussion for about two weeks having the same problem as many others here. As I see it, it is definitely not a cable or TV firmware problem. All other devices works properly with the same HDMI cable (blueray player, computers etc.). It does not concern all Sony or Philips TVs, just certain models but I can't see the pattern. Reading all the 22 Pages of this discussion it gets clearer and clearer that it is an Apple TV 2 problem, hard- or software. I talked to an Apple TV expert about a week ago and they were aware of the problem and working on it …
I upgraded last night and nothing changed, disappointing.
I will give it a second try with Apple support but if they don't give me a perspective for a solution I will send my ATV2 back to Apple and wait for the release of a working one. Too bad, it could be a great product.

Come on Apple! You're dealing with a growing image leak!
