Q: HDMI Handshake problems every 20 - 30 minutes - Color Inversion Issue

Dear all,

I used the old ATV for a long time and never had problems with it. Yesterday my new ATV 2 arrived. The setup was very easy but after a few minutes a problem with HDMI Handshake occurred and repeats at least every 20-30 minutes:

I get a green screen for one or two seconds and then the picture appears again with some kind of inverted colors.

I use a Philips 40 inch 7664 LED LCD with the newest firmware installed.

Any idea what I could to to fix this issue?

Thanks

Like one previous user I have a Sharp Aquos 37" (mine is a LC-37GD6U) and have standard-def width picture (squeezed) and magenta instead of black. It happens sometimes if I've switched away from the HDMI input and back, or if the TV was powered off and then back on. When the TV turns on, under HDMI it says 'VGA' for some reason. (Hmm.)

Pulling and reconnecting the HDMI cable fixes it. I haven't found a better way to fix it.

There is nothing between the ATV2 and the Sharp, straight cable connection. High quality cable, 6'.
Optical is connected to a Sharp STR-DA2100ES receiver, but I doubt that has anything to do with it.

I will be calling Apple shortly to add my data point. HTH...

The topic has 30 pages and so many views! The admins of the forum never make a statement? Is there a official statement of apple about the problem? I feel a little bit lost.

I have to agree with morechicken, we are getting lost overhere.

Fan232 indicated two pages earlier, and steve_acp on page 26 to address to product feedback section of Apple. I have written a very detailed letter to product feedback over two weeks ago on this issue and have not received any response from Apple to date.

It is absolutely outrageous that Apple does not come with a more official statement acknowledging this issue. Apparently making official support calls and writing official product feedback does not trigger any visible response from Apple. Maybe (or not) they are working behind the scenes on this issue, but there is no visibility in this. Some Apple support staff are aware of the issue, some not.

I will make an update to the list of impacted HDTV devices later this week. I noticed some additional Philips, Sony and Sharp HDTV models can be added to the list. Since I have been offline for more than a week I did not have time to make an updated list yet.

Let's hope Apple comes with a fix soon...........

I had the same problems with Philips PFL-8404 for a couple of weeks. Since last week everything works fine. Kids watched a lot of movies and they said there were no issues. Used it myself yesterday with screensavers and music but screen remained OK. No updates done on TV.

Well I am really glad that its magically working for you now. Hope it lasts...

Unfortunately for the rest of us the dreaded 'green screen of death' still prevails.
Last night my daughter was watching Shrek and lo and behold, every 20-30 minutes she would call me whereby I had to pause and change the input source so she could continue watching again. Really ****** me off, especially after the 3rd time.

I'm starting to reach the end of my tether.....

Hi sorry was travelling so didn't see the previous question. In my case the issue was interference with a cordless phone. They asked me to move it away from the ATV2 and everything started to work as expected.

I have been reading through this thread and am so disappointed with Apple. Just tell us what is going on. We will listen and accept that bugs appear. We just want a response.

I am actually amazed that my old Sony KV36XBR800 (4:3 crt) is even working with the new ATV2. Yes, it is letter-boxed and I knew it would be. I am using an HDMI to DVI cable and a optical audio converter to RCA component. Everything works flawlessly except I can only get 480p out of a device that is only supposed to produce 720p resolutions. This tv can handle 480p, 720p and 1080i content. I do not have any HDCP errors at all. I have watched several hours of streaming from iTunes and Netflix.

So, what gives. It seems like even people with newer tv's are having more problems than I am with an 8 year old tv. Apple has tons of loyal customers and I am one. I have several Apple products and just want 720p restored. Is that too much to ask?

I bet they'd already be here if any us had dropped the F word in the discussion...
30 pages of angry customer is obviously not enough for Apple, I think we need to make it at least 60!

here is an emailed response from the apple service rep to my enquiry to the status of remediating this problem.

    Hi Joe,
Nothing solid as of yet, I've been hearing rumors that there's going to be an update to the software for the AppleTV released this month, and as this was such a widely reported issue, I'd be very surprised if it wasn't one of the things the update focuses on. I'm really sorry I can't be more specific, but we don't generally get told in advance exactly what the iOS updates fix.
If I do hear anything concrete, I'll let you know.
    Regards

    This is embarrassing.

I can not sell a product that works well. Let alone a company as prestigious as Apple.

It is assumed that people have to have enough to fix this problem. And if you do not know how to do it, not sell it.

I have all Apple products (MacBook, iMac, TimeCapsule, iPhone, iPods, etc), but this makes you lose confidence.

I have now saved the AppleTV box. It is impossible to see a movie and have to be standing up to remove and put the HDMI cable. Embarrassing!

Apple employees, put the batteries now

    SONY KDL40P3600. From Spain.

    Thanks.

I have a Sony KDL-37S5500 and a Sony KDL-40W5500. The Apple TV (2), updated with the latest firmware, works perfectly with the KDL-40W5500 but with the KDL-37S5500 I get the same problem described elsewhere in this thread. Every 20 minutes or so the screen goes negative blue in colour. Sometimes it will self correct after a few minutes, mostly I have to turn the Sony off and back on again to correct the picture (leaving the Apple switched on). Apple Support told me they have had reports of this problem with certain Phillips TV's but not with the Sony. They informed me that the report would go to their engineers for investigation. In my opinion the more reports they get the faster they may respond.

Same problem over here (Germany) with a Philips 8404 (40"). After 20-40 Minutes the screen turns green/blue and the only way to solve it is to switch the hdmi ports via the remte or to "replug" the atv.

I still have a atv1 an there is no problem with it like with the second modell.

I even tried to upgrade the firmware of the tv with the latest version from philips but the problem is still there.

So apple, we are waiting for a fix...
