Q: HDMI Handshake problems every 20 - 30 minutes - Color Inversion Issue

Dear all,

I used the old ATV for a long time and never had problems with it. Yesterday my new ATV 2 arrived. The setup was very easy but after a few minutes a problem with HDMI Handshake occurred and repeats at least every 20-30 minutes:

I get a green screen for one or two seconds and then the picture appears again with some kind of inverted colors.

I use a Philips 40 inch 7664 LED LCD with the newest firmware installed.

Any idea what I could to to fix this issue?

Thanks

I'm not saying they should hold off on fixing other bugs until they fix this one but there have been two updates and still no word on what is being done for this. I doubt Apple have unlimited resources working on the Apple TV so it is the nature of software development that bugs get priorities. This has been an open bug since early October, Apple hire smart people so if they gave this a high priority then undoubtedly they could have fixed it by now. If you always fix the easy bugs you never have time to fix the difficult ones.

Yes, but the fact that they have fixed other bugs is still no proof that they are prioritising others.

We have no idea how many people are working on the Apple TV and how they are setup. My guess is that there are a small number of teams who work on individual projects.

We also don't know how involved each of these fixes are. For all we know the ones that were included yesterday involved just a small change to the software, which only took a tiny amount of resource to fix. If that is the case then they did exactly the right thing.

Also, the first update mainly just made changes for 4.2 features to work, so it's likely it was pretty well written when the Apple TV hit the stores. This update was the first real "bug-fixing" update.

Oh yes, it's very frustrating, and I say that as someone who only has the problem with my second TV, that doesn't get used all that much for video.

I'm not a developer not even a tecnical HDMI expert but what makes us so sure that it's a software issue?

    All,

As indicated earlier in this topic I have been in contact with Philips and they have sent an engineer to my home to have a look at this problem. According to the engineer he has not seen this problem earlier.

Philips has installed a completely new motherboard on my TV and updated with the latest TV software and the problem still exists. I also have the latest Apple TV2 software installed.

As the problem still exists, my personal conclusion is strengthened that this is an issue in Apple TV2. As the problem is already known for about 3 months and till now has not been resolved through a software update, I start believing this is an issue that might be hardware related.

Reading this topic there is growing frustration around this issue towards Apple (I think rightfully so), which Apple could easily prevent by starting to communicate. I would like to ask Apple (I know they are reading along) to come with a statement regarding this issue!

    Hi Sjefkoning,
thank you very much for this information and thanks to Philips support. Now we're talking and I'm very exited about a possible Apple response. We will wait and see.

I have no idea whether it's a software issue or now. I don't think I've suggested what it is have I?

Sorry if I made the impression that you were suggesting it a software issue and in that case I apologize. I just referred to the whole discussion writing "what makes us so sure ..“ and that is at least 95% about software and updates.

Last week I submitted an official apple bug report, the link was posted earlier somewhere.
Today I got a response stating that this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering.
To me this is positive feedback, even though it has not been made public and hence I will be patient a while longer.
If we were to all submit a bug report the severity of this issue might be taken more seriously.
Where is that link? Will post it when I find it...

I see, sorry, I thought I may have said something to indicate that.

Personally, my fear is that it is a hardware issue. In the opening part of this thread, someone suggested it may be something to do with the HDMI port being underpowered (I think that's what it was, I can't be bothered to go back and check). My concern then was that this may mean that a software fix won't solve it.

I know absolutely nothing about these things though, so it's pure speculation. The fact that a fix seems to be taking a while to find is not encouraging though.

    Dear All

First of all i would like to excuse myself for eventual mistakes in this text. My english isn’t very good. Like all users in this forum I have the same problem with Apple TV 2 and my Philips 42PFL..(Unfortunately I don’t know the exact modelnumber anymore).

I read the comments of all users in this topic and I tried to solve the problem by myself by exchnanging the HDMI cable and updating my Philips TV and the Apple TV 2. Unfortunately that didn’t work so I decided to call the Apple Support in Switzerland and they told me that they already knew about these issues and that they didn’t have a solution yet.

So right now, my only two options are to bring back the Apple TV 2 to the Apple Store or to wait until they find a solution.

Alright, I speculate exactly the same way. Earlier someone also wrote about the difficulties combining HDMI and HDCP and it did not sound good either.
