Dec 17, 2010 7:11 AM in response to Mats Liljedalby pollonder,The only language apple understands, is money, money and money. Philips PFL 8404 with the usual problems. My ATV is going back for a refund. Never ever again. -
Dec 17, 2010 8:07 AM in response to pollonderby Mats Liljedal,It is disappointing to buy a product that wont work as it should but I believe that Apple has more properly working products than most other companies. Of course they understand the money language, it is supposed to be the result of most economic activities. But Apple also understands the language of customer satisfaction, their success is based on it. That's what keeps me hoping for an official response and a solution from Apple. -
Dec 17, 2010 8:24 AM in response to Mats Liljedalby pollonder,Basically your right. But it seems to me that their success made them forget what is important. Wanna have a prove? This thread started 2,5 months ago. Any reaction what sort ever? Nope. -

Dec 17, 2010 10:50 AM in response to KeithJennerby r_andy,I dont think thats a hardware problem (underpowered) because it works well with other tvs...so why should it be nderpowered on philips and sony devices and not on others? -
Dec 17, 2010 2:24 PM in response to r_andyby tgibbs,At present, it is difficult to know which device is behaving incorrectly. Most likely, one device is not executing the HDMI/HDCP handshake correctly, and the other device is overly sensitive to whatever the error is. We know this because the Apple TV works fine with most other TV sets, the affected TVs work fine with other HDMI signal sources. Of course, it is also possible that both devices have errors in their implementations, which just unfortunately happen to interact.
Even if the problem is with the TV sets, Apple will likely be the one that will have come up with a fix, simply because they have more incentive--people are more likely to return a new device because it doesn't work with their TV than they are to replace their existing, more expensive TV set, so the impact will be greatest on Apple, no matter who is at "fault." But since it seems to work OK for a while and then generates an error, it may well be that the offending device does something incorrectly only rarely. Unfortunately, such sporadic errors tend to be difficult and time consuming to track down and correct. So it may be some time before this is fixed. -
Dec 17, 2010 3:03 PM in response to r_andyby KeithJenner,I have no idea, as I say, I don't understand these things. I'm just commenting on what someone else said. -
Dec 18, 2010 7:56 AM in response to dwagner1270by Coldfire,Yep - this is hitting me too. I took the ATV2 back to the AppleStore to exchange for another. All I get is the problem and the latest firmware does not help.
I'll give this another week and then go back for a full refund.
Is this being looked into urgently? -
Dec 19, 2010 1:14 AM in response to Arcade99by Canariasdata,Hello all!
Still not a victim, I would like to ask -prior to buying- if anybody knows if my 4 year old Phillips 42PFL9632D/10 will (or not) work OK with the aTV2.
I know it won't be of any help but AppleTV is not the only "new" apple product that suffers bad bugs. Just search for iMac 27" and tinted yellow screens...
same support behavior, thousands of complains, thousands of returns...
Don't get me wrong, *I LOVE* my iMac27, my Macbook, my iPhone 4G, my iPad but the quality that apple was famouse for some years ago has nothing todo with what happens in the last 2-3 years.
Keeping fingers crossed for all of us!
Cheers,
Gregor -
Dec 19, 2010 2:32 AM in response to Canariasdataby Mats Liljedal,Hi Gregor,
there are at least two lists with affected TV sets on this thread. One on page 24 and one on page 27. I can't find your TV on either of them, but that's no guarantee that it's not affected. The closest they get to your model is the Philips 42PFL 9664 and that one is affected.
Not much of a help I'm afraid. Good luck. -
Dec 19, 2010 4:26 AM in response to Mats Liljedalby Canariasdata,Hello Mats,
thanks for the relpy!
The Philips model reported having these problems and being even more close to mine was the 47PFL9732 (by Sascha Brock, Page 26). First I was very confident that my TV would work but 9732 versa 9632 distroyed the last hope I had.
Problem is I live in Lanzarote/Canary Islands and we don't have any official Apple store here. Not even Apple Spain counts Canary Islands as part of Spain (cry) and they do not ship to the canaries at all.
So buying an AppleTV in Germany than sending it back in case it doesn't work is no option for me.
Just thought a 42PFL9632 owner could give a quick YES or NO.
All the best,
Gregor

Dec 19, 2010 5:07 PM in response to Arcade99by Ajaxrex,Might as well add the Sharp Aquos LC-37D90U to list of televisions that the AT2 will not play nice with. In the instruction manual for the TV it list both HDMI ports as having HDCP, however my AT2 will only give me the "This content requires HDCP for playback". Hmmmmmm. Well, I ordered two HDCP compliant cables, and neither of them make a difference. I have tried both HDMI ports and still nada. I have tried rebooting the tv and the at2, in different boot orders even, and still nothing. I even tried unplugging the HDMI cable and plugging it back in while attempting to get a movie to play. Still nothing.
As a last resort I took the apple tv to my office where I plugged it into the HDMI port on my Samsung 30" computer monitor ( I don't have the model number handy ). Low and behold it actually worked!
My first thought was that my television was the problem. However my Sony PS3 works just fine with the HDMI ports. My series 3 TIVO works just fine with the HDMI ports. My xbox works just fine with it. They all have HDCP...so...I am concluding the problem is with the apple tv.
I want to thank Apple for the 100$, excellent looking paperweight. I don't think anyone else on my block owns such a fine looking, expensive piece of inert plastic as my Apple TV. -
Dec 19, 2010 6:38 PM in response to Ajaxrexby KeithJenner,Don't add that model to the list of TV's with the problem covered by this thread.
This is a different issue. -
Dec 20, 2010 2:56 AM in response to Arcade99by Kwintin,So let's make a nice spreadsheet, what do you say?
Here is to see the list before entering your TV model and making sure you're going to enter a duplicate:

And here's the form:

Dec 20, 2010 3:23 AM in response to Arcade99by Yo-han,Just came of the phone with Apple Care in The Netherlands. They admitted there is a problem with Sony and Panasonic tv's but blame them. Now I'm waiting for a callback with a possible fix. As soon as I know more I will share the info over here.
I also had a discussion today about who to blame for this problem. It could be very well that Sony and other tv companies added some quircks to there HDMI software in there own benefit. Apple is new in this business and probably build it according the standards as they don't know those tricks yet. TV companies will keep blaming Apple and all we can do is to wait for Apple to take the blame and come up with a fix. It's not cool but for as far as I can remember they the same situation when wifi problems occured with the Airport Extreme and Windows Laptops.
