Q: HDMI Handshake problems every 20 - 30 minutes - Color Inversion Issue

Dear all,

I used the old ATV for a long time and never had problems with it. Yesterday my new ATV 2 arrived. The setup was very easy but after a few minutes a problem with HDMI Handshake occurred and repeats at least every 20-30 minutes:

I get a green screen for one or two seconds and then the picture appears again with some kind of inverted colors.

I use a Philips 40 inch 7664 LED LCD with the newest firmware installed.

Any idea what I could to to fix this issue?

Thanks

can someone with a SONY-TV please check the following:

one of the 4 HDMI-Slots is denominated ARC(HDMI)...it's written over the slot...this is a special port for sony-hdmi-devices...try the NON-ARC-SLOT...someone in another forum wrote that he has not the problem because of the use of the other hdmi-port...

    does it change something?

I bought my ATV2 last week. unfortunately it doesn't work with my Philips 40PFL5605H/12. Most of you could be happy because you can see at least something. On my TV the screen is just black. No message from the screen like "No signal". Just black. Does some one know this behave?

and where would this 4th non-arc HDMIT port be located? Mine's a 37S5500, so perhaps there isn't a 4th port.

it doesn't matter if there are 3 or 4 ports, the ex715 for example has four HDMI ports, yours probably only 3. The fact is that one of these 4 ports (or 3) is a ARC-port...

OK, with the ATV2 connected to HDMI3, the problem is still there.

HDMI/HDCP has a history of being problematical. It is incredibly complicated
    (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-bandwidthDigital_ContentProtection)
and there is a long history of various HDMI devices being incompatible with specific TVs, with the manufacturers typically pointing the finger at each other. Here is what Monoprice says about the compatibility of their HDMI switchers (I have one, by the way, and it works perfectly with my TV and my devices, including AppleTV):

"The problem with HDMI switchers is there is no one switch that is compatible with every device out there. In fact, even with the same brands, one model of DVD player may work with a particular switch but a different model will not. Also, compatibility is not specific to a single device. Instead it's a 3 way relationship between the source, the switch and the display. So, a particular dvd may work through a particular switch to a certain TV, but not to another TV, but that TV may work through the switch with another DVD player. Given that, you end up with infinite number of possible combinations so it's impossible to know based on brands what devices with work with a particular switch and what won't. The trick is to find a switch that will work with your particular combination of devices. In theory, a switch will work with every device but only if it's connect in turn to another device that it is compatible with."

Chances are that we'll never know which company or companies were actually "at fault" in terms of having bugs in their implementation. AppleTV works fine with many TVs, and the affected TVs work fine with many HMDI devices. It will probably be up to Apple to fix it, however, even if they are not at fault, because the TV companies know that you are not likely to return your large expensive TV that is probably out of warranty, anyway. So even if they are at fault, they are not likely to be working very hard to fix it. So Apple will need to find a fix or a workaround. And given the complexity of the issue, this probably won't happen quickly. Apple's engineers will probably have to obtain samples of the affected TVs, study them, and figure out what is going wrong.

I wonder if issue(s) relating to the implementation of HDCP/HDMI manifests itself as colour changing (messing) as we all posted here?

Apple released an update (4.1.1) on 16th December (UK). Did this solve the problem subject of this thread?

That's right - latest firmware update did not sort this out. I made sure this was done before I seeked help from the Genius bar. Got an exchange for a brand new ATV2 but the problem is still there. If not fixed soon enough, I'll just get a refund and buy again once this is sorted.

I do not know the significance of the Sony model codes but it's odd that my KDL-40W5500 works ok with the Apple TV and not my KDL-37S5500. Judging by the last post there would seem to be a significance in the 'S' of the model number.

Apple promised to contact me within two days. That was over a week ago. Sad that they cannot make some effort to issue a short statement acknowledging this problem to save us all this frustration.

Updatet to 4.1.1 and same Problems with my AppleTV + Philips 8486 LCD 42"!!!!!

Is it possible if I plug the ATV to a Audio Reciever like Harmon&Kardon and then from the Audio Reciever to the TV without Problems?

ok, after a quick look on the spreadsheet, every philips has the problem, samsung tvs are not affected. But the most interesting thing: Some sonys have the problem, some sonys havent...there is also the sony ex705 that has NOT the problem...so what's the difference about the 40z4500/40ex705 and the other sonys that have the problem? different chips?
