Dec 24, 2010 12:53 AM in response to Arcade99by Sjefkoning,Good morning all,
A small status update from my side. Although, nothing really changed with regards to resolving the issue
This morning, a second Philips engineer came to my home to have a more extensive look at the problem after I reported back to Philips that the motherboard change of my Philips TV did not fix the problem. This morning´s visit the engineer had an extensive look at the setup also in comparison to the properly working PS3 and DVD player. The Philips engineer expected that the problem would be in the software coding of the Apple TV in how it transmits through HDMI to the HDTV. Now I am no tech guy, so did not understand much of all the details he was explaining. Good news is again, that Philips takes some care for its customers and actually listens to their customers. There is so much that Apple can learn from Philips in customer service. I actually think the customer service part of Apple is worse than the Apple TV2 product.
Earlier this week I had contact with Apple Support in NL for the third time reporting the problem is still existing since the last contact. In the mean time there were the two software upgrades. So the call was basically to inform them that their software upgrades did not resolve the issue as did a motherboard upgrade of my TV did not resolved. After being on hold for 25 minutes (shortest waiting time I experienced with Apple Support desk to date) They reacted a bit surprised. This was new information for them as they expected the software upgrades should have resolved the issue. They said they would report it again and expected somebody would be looking at it. The support staff did not appear to take must interest in the call. His message was, we do not sell this device in NL so Apple should not care to much about the Apple TV problems. His message was, if you have a problem take it back to Germany where you bought it -
Dec 25, 2010 10:41 AM in response to Sjefkoningby r_andy,installed my new atv2, working (for now, aprox 2 hrs) fine with sony 40EX715...IOS4.0 on it...reporting if problem comes out the next hours/days... -
Dec 26, 2010 7:00 AM in response to r_andyby Daniel V. Nielsen,I'm still having this problem and it starts to be really annoying. I haven't read through the whole thread are there any word from Apple on this? It's a bit stupid having such an integral piece of my home entertainment center, not working with something as simple as showing video. -
Dec 26, 2010 8:15 AM in response to Daniel V. Nielsenby tgibbs,Apple does not normally respond on this forum, if they even read it. Based upon past history, it is unlikely that Apple will have any public response (other than telling people who call Apple Support that they know about the problem and "are working on it") until they release an upgrade that "improves compatibility with some television sets." Given the complexity of HDMI/HDCP and the fact that this is a sporadic failure, it could be a difficult problem to solve, so it is hard to guess how long it will take Apple to find a solution. -
Dec 26, 2010 12:50 PM in response to tgibbsby scott.rich,I've got this problem with my brand new ATV2 and a Sony KDL-408x400. Happens every twenty minutes or so, corrects itself by unplugging hdmi cable or switching inputs.
It will go back to Apple tomorrow, I think...

Dec 27, 2010 11:27 AM in response to Arcade99by DPKLetchworth,Hi,
In UK, Sony KDL-40S5500 TV 13 months old, ATV2 1 week old. Had colour inversion problems (pink screen) and went back to Apple store. Described problem but was met with blank faces and told they had never heard of this issue before! (really??) Bought second unit as I was assured it must just be a faulty unit and I didn't have the original with me at the time. Guess what - second ATV2 does exactly the same. Have all latest updates for Sony TV and ATV2, no digital audio cable connected, fault persists. Have tried Apple HDMI and high(er) quality Belkin cable with do difference. Switching between HDMI inputs on TV resolves problem instantly but it is a pain doing this every couple of minutes during a film (even does it during audio podcasts with screen saver). I will try buying a HDMI switch tomorrow as this seem to have worked for several people. Quite why I should have to throw another £25 at this problem I'm not sure. As this has been an issue since launch I am really disappointed that Apple haven't come up with a fix yet and I don't buy the usual line that APple's products are fine, it's everyone else's products that are at fault. The Sony TV works fine with all the other HDMI devices feeding into it. I will keep an eye on this thread to see if any other solutions are suggested. Otherwise two ATV2s will be boxed up and returned to the Apple Store. -
Dec 27, 2010 1:16 PM in response to DPKLetchworthby Coldfire,I got exactly the same response when I exchanged a ATV2 for another, hoping there might just be a unknown gremlin in the hardware that's causing this, but no - same issue popped up. The staff at the store put up a "don't tell, don't ask" kind of wall.
On another note, it seems that fellow ATV2 users using LG/Samsung TVs are nearly un-affected - remarkable...now do we need a TV upgrade for the bedroom? -
Dec 27, 2010 3:52 PM in response to Coldfireby dj_grimmace,I have a slightly different issue which seems as though it may be related but with slightly different symptoms. I have my ATV2 connected via HDMI to my Rotel receiver which is then connected via HDMI to my Panasonic Viera tv.
None of the sound effects play when I am navigating menus unless I navigate back and forth constantly - don't really care but a symptom of the larger issue where I 1. never receive a dolby digital signal from the ATV2 to my receiver, 2. sometimes get loud pops and clicks when a movie from Netflix OR a song streaming from iTunes is paused or stops playing. This can get super loud as the popping plays very loudly through my sub.
I've tried different ports and different HDMI cables to no avail. All my other HDMI devices work properly (HD cable, PS3, XBOX 360.) -
Dec 27, 2010 5:06 PM in response to Coldfireby Bill Northcott,Just to add another unhappy punter to the list.
I have a brand new ATV2 with a Phillips 32PF9966 panel. This worked OK with ATV1.
I have the Magenta instead of black shown in a number of posted photos. Normal connection is via Pioneer VSX920, also tried direct connection, assorted cables, endless power cycles reboots etc.
Works perfectly with 13" LCDTV I bought in Dick Smith for AUD99! -
Dec 27, 2010 5:42 PM in response to Arcade99by Stanislaw8080,And yet another TV to add to handshake concern: Sony KDL-40BX400.
Temporary solution working: change input source back and forth to remove green/pink screen.
TV is 6 months old, Apple TV 10 days. Updated TV and Apple TV and the problem stayed. Come on Apple! I'll wait few more weeks and return the Apple TV if nothing will change... -
Dec 28, 2010 2:28 AM in response to Arcade99by msjgkemp,Hi all,
Same problem here, I got my Apple TV 2 for Xmas 4 days ago and I hooked it up to my Philips 42PFL7404 H/12 ... easy setup but after anything from 5mins to 45mins the picture's colours invert.. Changing the source input on the TV to another source and back to the Apple TV again does fix the problem but is hardly a convenient solution... especially when watching a movie!
I have downloaded the latest apple TV software (4.1.1) but no changes unfortunately.
There is one positive in this problem, in that it does appear that sometimes it goes back to the normal colour by itself but only randomly, and usually when the screensaver kicks in again. It is only sporadic though so it really isn't much of an answer, again especially when watching a movie...
Hope Apple listens to us out there... this is my first apple product which has any issues! I have an ipod touch and macbook pro and never had any issues with those.
Thanks -
Dec 28, 2010 2:51 AM in response to Stanislaw8080by Homerecordman,I called the Apple Support today. They don't know yet if there will be an update to fix this problem in the next weeks. I'll send the Apple TV 2 back to Apple until the problem is fixed. -
Dec 28, 2010 9:43 AM in response to Arcade99by vestax32,I am also having this problem. Got my Apple TV today and was very happy until every 20 mins or so the screen goes a funny blue/pink colour. When will this be getting fixed? -

It's hard to know. Historically, Apple has generally not attempted to make predictions as to how long it will take them to fix a bug. Just from the nature of the problem--sporadic and affecting only certain brands and models of TV set, it sounds like the kind of probably that could be difficult and time-consuming to fix.
If you haven't done so might want to add your TV brand/model to the spreadsheet to help other visitors who may be considering buying Apple TV

Also, you should probably contact Apple directly, as they probably do not read this forum routinely.
