Q: HDMI Handshake problems every 20 - 30 minutes - Color Inversion Issue

Dear all,

I used the old ATV for a long time and never had problems with it. Yesterday my new ATV 2 arrived. The setup was very easy but after a few minutes a problem with HDMI Handshake occurred and repeats at least every 20-30 minutes:

I get a green screen for one or two seconds and then the picture appears again with some kind of inverted colors.

I use a Philips 40 inch 7664 LED LCD with the newest firmware installed.

Any idea what I could to to fix this issue?

Thanks

The tech specs for ATV2 states "H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second....".

The colour inversion problem occurs just after a "twitch" or "blink" on the screen. My sony TV also detects and reports 720p on the related HDMI port everytime this "twitch" occurs.

I've noticed this behavior as well just a day before. I didn't spent to much attention of this as I got atv2 2 months ago, but past days I used my atv2 againg cause of my holidays (actually i intended to send it back...) But now I'm always aware of anything that looks or sounds not normally.

I also detected, that switching the input not always works, only if I switch between HDMI input will work fine again. If I switch to component or PC and go back to atv2-input won't work. (switch to TV and back to atv2-input will work as well).

But i doesn't make fun at all...

Wish this is reported more prominently on the usual Apple news sites such as macrumors, appleinsider, cultofmac, etc. Surely, Apple wants to keep the competition at bay and not let this problem (with big TV brands) spoil the entire show.

I am doing what I can so that this will become public knowledge.

My TV does not report the resolution when such a short dropout happens, either because it is to short or because I'm not affected by the color change, only by this dropout/short change to black.

The fact that AppleTV is selling so well tells us that this is not a common problem among owners. But in a broader sense, it is not all that unusual. Over the years, I've seen quirky HDMI handshaking problems crop up on a number of devices, and I gather that they can be very difficult to diagnose and fix. A couple of days ago, I set up a new receiver for my brother. He doesn't have AppleTV, but he has a similar device, a Roku box. But I found that when switching HDMI inputs on the receiver from another device to the Roku box, the TV screen would sometimes come up with no signal, or a green screen, and I'd have to reset the Roku to get it to work. Now he's had the Roku box for over a year, so I figured that surely there would be something about a fix on the Roku forum. Instead, I found a thread going back to 2008 with posts as recent as a couple of days ago, complaining about this problem on both old and new Roku models.

Just today I spoke to the Apple help desk. The good news is that Apple if fully aware of the problem and is working on a solution. The bad news is that Apple seems to be far away to provide a solution. The person I spoke to was not really sure that Apple will fix the problem in an acceptable time frame. He said to me that he would understand if I would send the ATV back to Apple. Well...

Got the same problem with my Philips 42PFL7404H/12 . Updated the TV to the newest firmware and plugged an HDMI-switch between the Apple TV an my Philips. Does not solve the problem.

Today I'll send the Apple TV 2 back to Apple.

    Hi, everyone,

I've got the exact same problem, using a Finlux 42" LED tv, and ATV 2. I had a conversation yesterday with Apple support, who were helpful, and suggested trying the turn off/reset/ solution. It didn't work (yet). They also suggested contacting the tv manufacturer for a software upgrade to correct the handshake problem. Has anyone tried this?

When I was talking to Apple support, I mentioned this forum, and they did not seem to be aware of the fact that there are 42 pages of chat on this problem. Hello, Apple!

As far as I know, no firmware upgrades from the TV manufacturers (Me included) have cured the issue.

Also, as far as I know, no one else on this forum has an issue with any other product plugging into the HDMI.

The problem is clearly in Apples camp. I think the answer we get from Applecare depends on the experience of the operative. Always ask to speak to an apple tv expert.

    Good Liuck

We've got new posters now seeing the same problem.

Can a moderator please change the title of this thread to "Colour Inversion and HDMI Handshake problems every 20 -30 minutes". This will make this thread more obvious to the issue being discussed.

I want to add my name to this list as well.
Just purchased an Apple TV at Christmas.
Everything works well for around 20-25 minutes. Then screen goes green for a couple of seconds followed by inverted colours. Switching my TV to a different HDMI input then switching back to ATV sorts out the problem but it recurs again about every 20 minutes more or less, sometime even two or three times in a 10 minutes range. I am very disappointed and Apple should officially communicate that THERE IS a problem with the ATV2.
My TV is a Sony Bravia 37EX402.
Come on Apple, are you going to fix tis problem?

I just changed my setup and instead of plugging the ATV directly into the Philips TV, i plugged it into my Denon receiver/tuner and the problem went away immediately. Not a solution, but a good enough workaround for me.
