Feb 9, 2011 12:22 PM in response to KeithJennerby Millriver,I completely agree with you, I should have said it was "partly" their problem! which I am sure it was!
It takes 2 to tango! -
Feb 9, 2011 12:29 PM in response to KeithJennerby tgibbs,Yes, from Apple's point of view, it doesn't matter who is at "fault." Nobody is going to replace a TV that costs hundreds of dollars to get better compatibility with a $100 dongle, which means that there is not much incentive for the TV manufacturer to work on a fix. So whether or not it was Apple's fault, it was Apple's problem. Apple needed to find a fix or workaround, and from the fact that the affected TVs work with other HDMI devices, it was clear that there had to be something that could be done on the AppleTV end to improve matters. I imagine that Apple has been working very hard on the problem, but HDCP is complicated, and sporadic errors tend to be very time-consuming to diagnose and fix. -

Feb 10, 2011 1:46 AM in response to Arcade99by Coldfire,Make love, folks! The updated iOS is going to be released soon - suitably enough, on the St. Valentine's day (rumours, rumours, but that's another subject).
And pls, no more waffling about complexity issues. -
Feb 10, 2011 1:52 AM in response to Arcade99by dadudeness,Actually, some months ago it was guessed, the issue was about the output-signal YUF vs RGB. Someone was able to reproduce it with his PC hooked up to his TV set. If the ATI card was on YUF he got that color-inversion, after a change to RGB it was gone. That was in November!
What Apple did to solve it, was adding YUF <-> RGB to Preferences.
So there are two ways to interpret this:
1. Apple originally built something like an "Auto-Mode" inside ATV2 which simply did not work
2. ATV2's output has ever been YUF and not every TV set can deal with that. If so, they should have known that!
Anyway, Apple didn't exactly covered itself in glory having "developed" this issue and dealing with it. I'm pretty sure it was avoidable.
At the moment I'm just glad they fixed it, because ATV2 works so seamlessly with iTunes, iPad, ... I just did not want to return it. -
Feb 10, 2011 3:18 PM in response to dadudenessby tgibbs,YUF? Do you mean YUV?
Do you have a reference to the person who supposedly reproduced the problem? I could imagine the colors being off all of the time if the TV did not correctly negotiate the color space with the Apple TV, but it doesn't make much sense that the colors would be correct at first and then suddenly "invert," which is the problem with the Apple TV2 and the affected TVs. So it would be very interesting if somebody managed to reproduce this particular behavior.
If everything is working correctly, it should not be necessary to force RGB or YUV on the Apple TV end; HDMI displays are supposed to negotiate the color space with the signal source. -
Feb 11, 2011 1:44 AM in response to tgibbsby dadudeness,Yap, it's YUV, shame on me...
It's mentioned on page 15 of this discussion, i.e. this posting: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12546508 -
Feb 11, 2011 8:31 AM in response to Arcade99by tagline,Having the same issue with a new AppleTV and an epson projector. Picture quality is great for 10-20 minutes, and then starts to break up. Unplugging the HDMI cable and reconnecting it fixes the issue. Definitely not a cable or port issue. -
Feb 12, 2011 6:31 AM in response to Arcade99by Christian Erichsen,Same frustrating problem here with a Philips 32" LCD-TV 32PFL9604H ! -
Feb 12, 2011 4:24 PM in response to Arcade99by garnikma,Hi, I have a problem.
after buying Apple TV 2
When i see video every 20-30 minutes, the tv screen to become completely green, then pink and red. but video continues to playing
Apple TV 2 (OS 4.1.1)
Philips 32PFL7864H/60 (software most newest)
Router D-Link DIR 320 (software is newest)
When I disconnect the HDMI cable and resonant turn, everything works fine, but after 20-30 minutes, all repeat
You can still send the Apple TV in standby mode and resonant wake him up, in this case everything starts to work normally for 30 minutes. -
Feb 14, 2011 3:54 AM in response to taglineby dadudeness,You guys should have a look at the last couple of pages of this discussion. After that you might find out that iOS 4.3 - which presumably is about to be released within the next weeks - fixes this issue -

Feb 22, 2011 1:09 AM in response to Arcade99by chrisedmo,Great - cant wait to try out 4.3 beta.. but where are you guys getting those weird USB Mini-A cables? I can't find them anywhere?! -
Feb 22, 2011 2:26 AM in response to chrisedmoby dadudeness,What's so special about those standard Micro USB cables? -
Feb 22, 2011 2:31 AM in response to dadudenessby Coldfire,Nothing special or weird about micro USB connectors.
Except perhaps that the EU is going to standardise on this type of connectors for powering all low-power portable devices.
