Can't understand voicemails

On my original iPhone my voicemails sound like a tape slowed down so slow they are not able to understand. Old saved messages that were once fine now sound slowed down/garbled. I turned the phone off/on and it solved the problem once, but now it doesn't. Syncing the phone didn't do anything, nor did deleting the garbled messages. Is my phone toast?
