movies from iPhoto don't show up in apple tv

I have many movies saved in iPhoto events and albums. They show up in iTunes on the Mac, and they are synced to iPhone and iPad. But the same movies don't show up in apple TV home sharing photos.

As far as I know Apple TV has never supported watching videos from within iPhoto.

I don't know if this was true in 10.0.1, but in iTunes 10.1 there is an "Include Videos" checkbox in the Enable Photo Sharing menu pop-up.

You are correct! I don't think that checkbox was in the previous version of itunes, at least I don't remember it being there.

That said, I checked the "include videos" check box, but my iphoto videos still do not appear on my apple tv when I go to Computers --> My Library --> Photos.

Have you had any luck getting your iphoto videos to play on apple tv (without adding them to itunes separately, i mean)?

So, I have now updated my ATV2. The recent iTunes and ATV2 updates supposedly enable you to see the videos that are in your mac's iphoto library when you go to the photos section of your homeshared computer on the ATV2. Well, the videos are now visible amongst your photos in the appropriate events on the ATV2 (whereas they weren't before), but when I try to play the video on the ATV2 it starts to buffer, starts to play, and then immediately stops and I get a "there was en error loading this content". In a couple cases it made the apple tv reboot. I guess there is a bug either in iPhoto, iTunes, or the latest ATV2 update. The functionality is clearly built in now, but it doesn't work.

Can anyone else try out viewing your iPhoto videos on your ATV2 and report back whether you are getting similar errors or whether it is working fine for you? Thanks!

in itunes 10.1 from the advanced menu, there is a menu choice called "Choose Photos to Share" With the 10.1 update, there is a new check box added on there called "Include Videos".
From what I have read, this is supposed to allow movies that are in your iPhoto library to be viewable/Steamable to the AppleTV2. I have not been able to get it to work, but this does not seem to work yet. There was a story that said, this would not work until the appletv update. See link..

Let me know if anyone gets this working. I have a ton of movies in iPhoto as well.

It works!!!

It took about 10 minutes for Apple TV to update itself and restart. I can now watch videos from iPhoto via Apple TV. Be sure to update to iTunes 10.1 and select Share Videos, as others have noted.

- update iTunes
- select share videos
- update Apple TV
- contemplate getting an ethernet connection instead of waiting for wireless to buffering a few seconds

Small videos work great. Anything over two minutes buffers and fails.

MOV files show up. AVI files do not. AVI files do show up in iPhoto.

Good to hear. As I said above, I can see the iPhoto videos amongst my still photos on the apple tv now, but when I try to play them I inevitably get the "there was an error loading this content" message. I wonder if this is a result of the type of movie file I am using? I have a mix of iphone movies (.mov, or .mp4, I think), point-and-shoot movies (.avi, so I know they won't play), and DSLR movies (.mov I think) in my iPhoto library. Not sure why it is being buggy; I was trying to play a 45 second clip and got the error message.

But at least Apple addressed the omission! I'll try more to get it working tonight.

Can anyone suggest a batch conversion of AVI files in iPhoto to something that will automatically appear on my AppleTV?

I don't really want to use Handbrake to convert one file at a time.

Have you tried simply selecting all your .avi files in iPhoto and then just dragging them into iTunes? That should both convert the files to a filetype that is playable in iTunes, and copy the converted movie file (probably .mp4) into the iTunes media library. I think this is how I did it. Saves a lot of time. To speed it up even more, make a smart playlist that finds all the .avi movies in your iPhoto library, then you can just select all in that playlist and drag to iTunes.

Alternately, if you really want to use handbrake for some reason, note that you don't have to babysit and convert them one by one. Use the "add to queue" feature in Handbrake to queue up all the .avi files you want to convert, and then just run the queue. It will go through and convert all the videos in succession.

I have the Albums in iPhoto now. Thanks.

I can't drag MOV or AVI files to iTunes. Could I be missing something in iTunes?

Hmmm. That's odd; this is how I import all my movies from iPhoto to iTunes. What you want to do is, in iTunes, click on the "Movies" category in the left sidebar, so you see your movies, grouped by genre or theme or whatever. Then go to iPhoto, click a single movie (first try a .mov file) and just drag it over into the iTunes window. You ought to see your mouse cursor get a little green plus sign, indicating the movie will be copied into the itunes media folder.

For avi files, you may need to convert them with quicktime first. . . but I seem to recall not needing to do that. (sorry I'm at work right now so i can't test this).
