2010 Apple TV: Can't see "Computers" after iMac/ATV sleep

3-4 times now, I can't see my computer in the "Computers" menu after my iMac and/or Apple TV is in sleep mode. Home Sharing is on - on both my iMac and Apple TV - and my firewall is actually off. I have iTunes 10.0.1 and OS X 10.6.4. Each time I've had to quit and relaunch iTunes (I keep it and my iMac on all the time) or reset the Apple TV. When it works, it works great - I just keep losing the content from my iMac.

Thanks.

Mac OS X (10.6.4)

One of two things seemed to work last night as this morning when I woke up all my machines were working just fine (after having slept all night) and my library was still on my ATV2. One, I unchecked the "share my local library" box in iTunes and two, I followed another thread and it suggested turning on the photo sharing component of the ATV2. So I connected my ATV2 to iPhoto basically. It might be too early to tell but this is the first morning I have woke up and had no issues since I purchased the product the day it was in stores.

My Apple TV 2 is working perfectly. I have an iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 which is connected to an Apple Airport Extreme via Cat6 cable. The iMac is set for sleep mode in 10 minutes. I have "wake for network access" set to on. I leave iTunes running in the background and basically let the iMac go to sleep on it's own.

On the Apple TV 2, I have it running through WiFi and I have it set for sleep in 30 minutes, however I usually put it to sleep manually by holding the select button while in the main menu. Haven't had a problem and had it running for 3 days now.

Are the people who are having issues NOT running an Airport Extreme Base station? This article seems to suggest that you need an AEBS to run wake on demand. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3774

Well...the saga continues.

To re-cap...my issue is that I can establish the connection between the Apple TV and iTunes (iTunes library showing in the Computers tab on Apple TV). But, the iTunes library randomly disappears after an hr or so. It's not Apple TV or Mac sleep-related...since I had both set to never. I can re-establish the connection every time by turning Home Sharing OFF/ON on iTUnes...but that's not a real solution.

So, spent hrs on the phone with Apple Support and multiple emails. The guy has been VERY helpful...but clear the tech don't have a proven fix for this. I have changed router (Belkin N+) settings (channel, bank from N GB to N), etc...nothing worked. So, he suggested uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. Tried that last night, and 12hrs later...the iTunes library is still connected to the Apple TV. Now, for the interesting part. Can access my libary, and play movies and photes fine. BUT...con NOT play any music. Received the following error msg..."an error occured in loading this content". So, cannot play any music. Checked on iTues on the Mac, and can play fine. So, guess it's 2 steps forward 1 step back.

To me, it sure seems clear that it's not a wireless connection issue. Since even when I lose connection with my iTunes library I can still access netflix, youtube, etc...all things that require a wireless connection. I run the network test also, and everything check out. There is clearly an issue between the Apple TV and iTunes...somehow losing connection and not being able to stay linked.

I have the Apple Airport Extreme in-transit to me, which I think I am going to try for the heck of it.

Lastly...asking for a CLEAR answer to the issue below.

When you go to the Advanced menu in iTunes and turn on Home Sharing, if you hit the DONE button...the Home Sharing icon DOES NOT show in the iTunes devices list. But, if you just click out of the box and do not hit DONE...the Home Sharing icon does appear and stays. Looks like Home Sharing is ON either way...but VERY misleading (icon should be there if it's ON, not there if it's OFF).

Making progress...library stayed connected for about 20hrs this time before disappearing without notice. Geez...this is getting ridiculous. Guess gonna go back to my first gen Apple TV. Had major issues with that also disappearing from iTunes...but at least with the hard drive once you got in synced you were in decent shape.

Good luck to all...not expecting any concrete fix from Apple any time soon on this one

When I finally got mine working last night, I un-ticked the "Share my library on my local network", and it still worked o.k.
I listened to some of my music (sounded awesome through the home cinema), and watched a movie (once I'd remembered to switch the digital audio back on to get Dolby Digital - it switches back to "Auto" when you do a reset or a restore, and that reverts to stereo audio).
No problems for either........no juddering or handshake problems, just smooth video with 5.1 surround sound.
Best thing is, it's still connected this morning........

I've had another email from Apple Support, and they say they're still investigating and will have an answer by Thursday (tomorrow).
Bob.

BLAST............I've just switched it on again after 2 minutes, and it's lost my library again!

I had the same problem with losing my library after the ATV went into sleep mode. I tried various options as described in the forum but I think I've found the solution - well it's been working for me for the past 24 hours. I think the turning off of "Sharing my library" in itunes isn't relevant nor is the turning off and on of "Home Sharing" - the icon does appear under "Shared" in but then disappears. No what seems to work (and it is kind of logicial) is in "Settings" on the ATV, turn "Sleep After" to "Never" and only turn off ATV from the main menu page by pressing the centre button for a few seconds. So far it's working for me - hopefully it'll work for others.

Has anyone else seen a difference in the ATV2's ability to wake and see "Computers" after sleeping depending on if the ATV2 was manually put to sleep versus the ATV2 going to sleep at a set interval (5 min, 15, min, etc.) by itself?

I have seen improved ATV2 performance in accessing "Computers" after sleeping, but it is still not working 100% of the time.

It's been a few days since my last complaint so I just want to reiterate how frustrated I am with this product and how frustrated I am with Apple. I wish that Apple support had the same tenacity as the folks who moderate these forums. It might be months before there is a fix for this (if ever) but if I do some Steve-bashing this post will be gone within the hour. Stay classy Apple. I already feel better... I couldn't help myself- it was almost worth the $99 I paid to watch the ATV disintegrate in a blender this morning. Instead, I turned to the forums for catharsis.
