I don't know of a software that will stop SPAM. You need to go into the settings for each email account and check and see if they have anything you can enable or disable; other than that: be very very careful giving out email addresses!

I have several online email accounts I keep for "junk" on purpose, such as Yahoo. I did not even give my full name or other correct information - Yahoo does not need to know where I live or what my phone number is. And, Yahoo will sell your email address shortly after you create an account unless you immediately go into preferences and UNcheck about 100 things that they will share your email with by default. I found this after opening my first Yahoo account - I was receiving up to 300 spam emails every day. So I finally closed the account and opened a new one with the wrong zip code and no identifying information and I unchecked all those marketing preferences. Have not received one spam email since.

So, that might be one way for you to stop it: check out their settings (check everything everywhere) and, if necessary, open a new account. Send out an email notification to friends with new email address. Close the old account.

I know; I didn't check for that the first time either and I think they hope nobody checks for that so they can send you all those emails hoping you will buy something. If you have a Yahoo account, unchecking those marketing preferences now will not stop the spam emails anymore because your email address has already been given out, so the only way to stop that would be to sign up for a new account.

I Have seen a Software to be able to Stop Spam E-Mail but it's for a PC Microsoft Computer http://www.mailwasher.net/ Do they make something like that for an Apple iMac Computer to? or it has not come out on The Apple iMac Computer side yet?

If you want a better Spam filter than the one built into Mail you could look at SpamSieve: it is much more sophisticated and once it's been through a training period it is very good at identifying spam. Of course it can't stop the spam downloading in the first place - that can only be done at the server - but it will shift it into a spam foldeer so you won't be bothered by it and can clear it out at your convenience.

That software will work with Mac Mail, but not AOL, GMail, etc - see the requirements here:

It needs an email client or program such as Mail to work, so it won't be able to stop any spam on your web based accounts. The only thing you can do there is to into the settings and see what you can do there.

It may help if you automatically forward all those emails from AOL, etc. to Mail, but then the spam will just wind up in your Mail spam folder. It would be better to stop it before that.

The amount of spam received is sometimes triggered by the web sites you visit.
Avoid "adult" and other dodgy sites and spam can be reduced.

Here's a great free email service (it's free, though they accept donations, since they don't store anything; they're just forwarding) for keeping spam to a minimum: SpamGourmet.

You can set up "disposable" addresses that allow a limited number of messages (configurable by you for each such address) to be forwarded to another email account and then cuts off. Once you set up an account with them, you give out email addresses in this sort of form:

somewordyoupick.x.nameofyouraccount@spamgourmet.com

"somewordyoupick" is just a unique identifier for each usage and "x" is the number of messages you want to allow through. E.g.:

ABCsoftware.2.bdaniels@spamgourmet.com

and you'd get only two messages from whoever you give that email to and then SpamGourmet will stop relaying. You can have as many "disposable" addresses as you can think of unique identifiers.

Obviously it won't stop spam to existing email addresses, but it's ideal for situations where you have to provide a valid email to get registered, or get some free download, or some such thing, but where you don't want to risk ending up on spam lists. I've been using it for years and I get very little spam (only when someone clearly sold their list).

Spammers buy lists from other spammers, so if you got onto any spam list by any means, you'll quickly end up on multiple spam lists. And sometimes spammers buy lists from legitimate companies who aren't always as careful about your data as we all would like. Spammers also use "dictionary attacks", where they have software that just sequentially goes through combinations of first and last names, e.g "asmith@somedomain.com, adamsmith@somedomain.com" "alansmith", "bsmith", "betty smith", etc. Spammers can send out thousands or even millions of spam emails this way, using every email service they can find (yahoo, msn, comcast, etc) and they don't care how many bounce back since sending a milliion costs no more than sending one and thousands are likely to find a valid email address.

There's no absolute way to prevent spam, but not using an email name that lends itself to a dictionary attack -"Apple4Ever556" would be a very difficult name for an automated system to come up with, using things like SpamGourmet for sites you're not certain of and/or won't be using regularly, and running a good antispam filter such as the aforementioned SpamSieve, can help keep it to a minimum.
