I can't burn cds anymore

I've been reading other posts and I have the same problem. Since downloading the newest version of Itunes. I can burn cds. Does Apple know this? Is there a number I can call?

I'm having the same problem. I click on burn, and it checks the playlist, and then it freezes. I've tried it with several different playlists. My other programs burn music cds fine, anyone have any idea what could be causing this?? Here are my diagnostics:

Having same issue since upgrade. I have seen the problem reported in mulitple places. The similarities are Dell computers and itunes upgrade. I have posted this issue on the Dell website as well as with tech support. I don't care who's problem it is we just need some answers but it is very coincidental that it occured after the itunes upgrade.

I have upgraded the firmware on my HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC 424IN drive and slowed the speed down to the lowest speed possible. Still can't burn. I am using CDs from a pack I have previously used with itunes so that is not the issue.

Here is my full error:

jenbeast,

If you've been working with Dell support, I assume that you've been to the support page for your computer, correct?

Have you tried the updates labeled "Intel Mobile Chipset", and "nVidia GeForce4 440 Go"?

Have you tried putting the CD in and "letting it settle" for a moment and then click on burn? The problem is that it's not recognizing the blank CD, correct? Have you tried CDRW media, just for grins? Sometimes with cheap media, the discs on the top of the spindle are different / better than the discs on the bottom. What speed of media of CDR are you using?

I emailed all the information to Dell tech support (couldnt get through on chat) and was told it was an itunes issue. I have the latest Nvidia driver but I am not sure about the intel chipset. I have tried multiple cds from my pack. Here is my frustration....I have never had a problem before and I am not the only one with the same exact issue. All seem to be Dell users who just upgraded to the latest version of itunes. Seems very coincidental to me. I am going to de-install the latest version of itunes and got back a version. I will try again when I get home from work. I will let you know if that "fixes" the problem.

What version of iTunes were you using that worked for you? The CD burning engine in iTunes hasn't changed since 5.0 in September. But I have been working through a problem with another person, who claims that iTunes 6.0.2 started to freeze on burn for her. After a lot of back and forth chatter about drivers and whatnot, it turned out that she's freezing right before the burn starts (so it has nothing to do with drivers) where iTunes is now (with 6.0.2) checking the playlist before burn.

Actually in her case, it turned out that if she just waited a couple minutes, it shook itself loose and the burn was fine. That being patient worked for her. However, I'm convinced she's got a file in there that for some reason iTunes is struggling with and I'm trying to get her to help me figure out which one and why.

So, where are you freezing? Is it a playlist with purchased songs or songs you've imported from CD or a combination of purchased and ripped music? A screen shot would help immensely. Here are instructions on how to get a screen shot:

<http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/general/ht/winscreenshot.htm>

Use the Alt key (see the Tips sections) to get a picture only of iTunes, so I don't get any other information about your system. I'm just trying to figure out exactly where iTunes is in the process.

One version back. Whenever I am notified of newer versions I install them right away.

I thought I had fixed the problem but it is freezing again. I de-installed itunes and went back to the previous version and I got the same error ( so that seemed to rule out the itunes problem). I then went back to the Dell webpage and did an upgrade on the intel chipset. When I tried to burn a CD it worked perfectly. I just tried a second CD and again it freezes at "preparing <first song title>". It's been 15 minutes now I think that is patient enough. The time it worked it just ripped right along with no issues. I am only burning music purchased on itunes so I can have a backup in case of computer failure. I am at a complete loss now. I have never had any problems burning from itunes until now. (I have been using itunes for a year).

Feb 14, 2006 4:47 PM in response to jenbeast

ok, was it the same exact playlist? Or did the playlist that froze have different songs than the playlist that worked?

See iTunes had to do the same work in opening the songs, etcs, in previous versions, it just didn't do it up front. So, I'm not surprised that the problem didn't go away by pulling back to a previous version, but I think it's song related, not iTunes version related.

What's different about the two lists that you burned? What different between the one that worked and the one that didn't?

Feb 14, 2006 4:57 PM in response to toonz

The playlist that worked was the same one I have been trying to burn for 2 days now and froze 20+ times in a row. The new playlist just has different songs on it. All the songs have been downloaded from itunes.

If it is song related why I am getting hardware errors when I do a disc analysis? and why are all these Dell users having the same problems. That doesn't make sense.

Feb 14, 2006 5:03 PM in response to jenbeast

The only error you're getting from CD diagnostics is that it didn't really start the burn, error -128 is a user cancelled error, which also applies when the burn is terminated before it really starts.

You know a screen shot would really help. Other than that, we can check each song manually. What I want you do to, is quit iTunes and relaunch it (to make sure that nothing is cached and we're starting off fresh). Then go to that playlist and double click on each song, working your way from the bottom of the list to the top. Do any of these songs take a long time to start playing?

and now for something completely different,
i am having similar problems but only when using my external writer (an lg gsa4167b). i've wasted about 15 discs so far, and have been able to isolate it to audio quality (aiff) burns only. itunes will burn an mp3 disc without issue.
and my internal drive (i installed a benq into my emac) works flawlessly in any format.
i am using patchburn 4.0 to install the drive support file (for both writers).
the hang starts just after checking the playlist and the screen indicates burn initialization; and then nothing. conveniently it burns just enough info to toast the disc, as i have to manually turn off the drive to cancel the operation and allow itunes to quit.
while parts of this issue seem to be hardware related, and as i did not own the drive prior to installing 10.4.4 and upgrading to itunes 6.0.2, it seems odd that the drive works flawlessly burning anything and everything else. i can even burn dvds without issue, and disk copy(disk utility) works fine too.

are there any other mac users having the same issue?
any help would be great.

I am experiencing similair problems in that I can't burn I-Tunes songs with the Dell Inspiron to a blank CD. This failure includes playlists comprised solely of songs purchased from the music store as well as a playlist made up of songs that I downloaded from an existing CD from my I Tunes Library.

So far, I have tried the following: Talked to tech support on the phone, e-mailed tech support and took my laptop in to the Apple Store and worked with a Genius rep. Nothing has worked yet to resolve my problem - which is Error 4280. My burn starts out fine, but when it gets in to the first song, it stops, says burn needs to be cancelled, and then an error message - 4280 appears. Same thing every time.

I just ran another diagonstic test and cut and pasted the results immediately below. Please advise as to what my next step(s) should be. Thank you.
