HDCP Problem.... Unhappy Customer :(

Well, I have always been happy with Apple products... Until now 😟

Got my shiny new AppleTV, all excited to use it, got my daughter excited to rent a movie for her and blammo! Error!

"This content requires HDCP for playback. HDCP is not supported by your HDMI connection."

The problem is, my TV does in fact support HDCP via HDMI.

I spent an hour on the phone with Apple Support. I was told it is either my TV or my HDMI cable. So I call Panasonic (TV model: PT-50LCX63) and they tell me that if the HDMI connection is displaying a picture, then the TV is fine and it must be the cable...

So of course I head over to BestBuy and get myself the best darn cable they have (well just about). I did not spend the extra $$$ on Monster cables but I did by a good HDMI cable which says it supports blueray and all that jazz so it should work, right?

Nope.

Hook it up, fire up the AppleTV, link up with my macbook to access a movie I bought from iTunes and get the same freakin' error!

Now what?

If it's not AppleTV, not my TV and not the cable, what then? Me?

I can access music, movie previews all the menus, but not movies...

Do I just return the thing and give up?

I've had the same problem and apple have said that they are looking at it. I am convinced that it is a problem their end. They always distance themselves to start with, hoping that it will all just go away. But rest assured that it is not your TV (as it happens with any HD ready model) and it is not your cable (as I've tried many). They must look at it and fix it!! Just like the iphone 4 (which they said was fine to start with). Come on apple. Step up to the mark !!

Still not resolved, I have ordered the HDMI cabe from Amazon that's worked for everyone so far, this will be the 4th cable, so am keeping fingers crossed.

Also, the TV is under extended warranty so managed to confuse and convince the Samsung technician to change the mainboard free of cost.

If nothing else, will be buying the HDMi to component cables, soon my HDCP error fix attempts will cos more that the Apple TV itself, gah

Hi

After having similar problems and tearing my hair out & scouring the net. I finally found the problem which is related to the HDCP handshaking protocol on the HDMI devices via the lead (like on a network), not the apple TV...

The solution is to switch off the viewing device (TV or projector) and unplug its power lead from the mains for 5 mins. Unplug the apple TV power up again. Switch on the viewing device and it refreshes the HDCP handshaking for the devices and hopefully everything is as it should be ....

Hope it works as it did for me ....

I, too, have been experiencing the dreaded HDCP non-compliance message when attempting to view an iTunes or Netflix rental via my new Apple TV - 2nd Generation. For me it's a matter of connecting to a Samsung HDTV purchased in 2005 with an earlier version of the HDCP protocol (1.0 probably).

I contacted Apple Care and they worked with me to try all the possible fixes. Nothing worked. It was suggested I contact Samsung Tech Support which I did. The Samsung rep told me there were no firmware upgrades for my set, and then he told me "Apple products are not compatible with Samsung products... period." I was astounded by his proclamation. I suspect he is very mistaken about that but that's just a guess. He then told me he had purchased a new ATV2 himself to connect to a newer Samsung HDTV than mine and the HDCP problem was the same. I asked him what he ended up doing and he simply said, "I stopped trying." omg and this guy was trying to help me. I hung up the phone feeling very frustrated that my new ATV2 would probably only get used for streaming my music and videos from iTunes instead of for the main reasons I purchased it - Netflix and iTunes Movies.

After finding this discussion and especially so after finding the link to the HDMI to Component Video converter posted by Creator, I'm feeling a little better about the situation. I suspect the problem is that the ATV2 is not FULLY backward compatible with the older HDCP protocols. But with the converter box I have ordered, I am optimistic that I'll at least be able to access rented movies even if using component video cables... at least until the HDCP problem gets resolved with the ATV2.

I am very unhappy that I just purchased a new Apple TV, hooked it up with HDMI, and rented for a movie that must be played within 23 hours, only to find out that my HDMI is incompatible with HDCP protocol. The rental page said nothing about HDCP, nor did my Setup guide included with the Apple TV, and I'm very unhappy that I either have to go out and buy a new HDMI cable OR never rent movies from Apple again because I don't know which ones require HDCP. And I'm out the rental cost of a movie I didn't get to watch.

I loaded up my iTunes account on my MacBook to play the rental on there, and it wasn't listed anywhere. Does this mean that I can only play Apple TV rentals on Apple TV? I only have 23 hours to watch, please reply ASAP to let me know how I can watch on computer, if it's possible. Thanks.

I am experiencing this as an intermittent problem on a new Phillips HDTV, purchased 2009, with my new Apple TV.

The problem comes and goes with Netflix, with no apparent repeatable solution to date. Multiple restarts of all devices and plug/unplug the HDMI cable have eventually cleared the problem each time (but no repeatable sequence). Swapping for the best HDMI cable in the bunch did not clear it permanently either,

Problem did not first appear until the update to the Apple TV software.

Sometimes (like just now when I went to pull up the version number...) the Apple TV starts off with the "HDCP error" message even before attempting to play ANY content. Just at the menu level.

Netflix tech support was useless. Ditto Apple's.

PS: (I only own seven current Macs, eight iphones, and have an IT background. Wadda' I know.)
Time to fix it Apple

One other post I found suggested to check the HDMI plugged int ATV. It may look snug fit but his was not in tightly. I had everything work on Netflix until I actually tried to play a movie or TV show then I always got HDCP error. I simply wiggled the HDMI plug into the ATV a little harder and now everything is working just fine. So before replacing HDMI cables and such try making sure the plugs on the HDMI cable are in all the way. It worked for me.
