MacBook and external WiFi antenna

Hi all,
I just purchased an external wifi antenna to hopefully boost my MacBook's wifi range. It is a Kasber antenna and is supposed to run the Ralink driver/software (it is available for OS X 10.6 too). I plug it in to the USB port and the software opens, but the number of available networks is much lower than the internal AirPort provides and the software also says the antenna is "disconnected" even though it is not (the light on the antenna is blinking even when it says it is not connected). I am very confused because this product is supposed to extend the range of the WiFi signal, so I should see more networks. Also confused as to why it says it is disconnected when it is in fact not.
Thank you for your help,

MacBook 2.4GHz (White), Mac OS X (10.5.6), 2GB RAM, 160GB HD
