how to reverse MIDI "playback"

To play a sample in reverse, reversing the MIDI note event will only reverse the position of where the note is triggered. That's all MIDI is - it;'s information you send to trigger a sound - it is not sound itself.

Best thing to do is reverse the audio sample.

Find the audio sample or record the MIDI sample and bounce in place.
Double-click to open int he Sample Editor.
Choose Functions > Reverse.
Create a new Sampler Instrument and add the sample or add it to an existing sampler instrument.

That's all there is to it.

be careful though because reversing an audio file in the Sample Editor is a destructive action and will permanently change the file. So make a backup of the original (if you need to).

...but if you apply Reverse to the reversed bit, you get the original back...

...given that your Selection is identical both times...

very true... but of course it should be the same selection as Christian says.

In this example the only reason I'd say back up the original or create a new file to be reversed is if the OP wishes to use the original and reversed files in their sampler instrument.

Select a region, say 9 bars long (in this example), go to the Transform window, choose the *Reverse position* preset, as Position put in bar 1-10 (this position is +relative to the region,+ so no matter where in the project the region is, the beginning of the region is at 1 1 1 1 as far as the Transform window goes, so forget what the transport says)
Now click *Select & Operate* and your phrase will be reversed.

Using an EXS Instrument, you might as well click the Reverse checkbox in the Instrument Editor, which is non-destructive. If it is non-destructive, is that constructive, then ?
