Xanté Accel-a-writer 3N - cant print with 10.6.4

I have been printing to a Xanté Accel-a-writer 3N for years on an ENET LAN with a G3 and G4 with Tiger and Leopard.

I have gotten a new Mac Mini to replace the G3, but cannot get the Mini to print to the printer. I have set it up as an IP printer trying both LPD and IPP. The printer is seen and can be pinged, but when I try to print and watching 'Printmonitor' it connects to the printer, says "Copying print data" and then goes to pause or says cannot connect to printer.

The Xanté driver has not been updated since Tiger and I have been able to use the LW 8500 driver with Tiger and Leopard with great results (it is the same printer as the LW 8500)

The printer has ENET, Localtalk, parallel and pc-type serial connectors. No USB.

I am wondering if this is a driver problem or a configuration problem. O wonder if some other driver would work (generic does not).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you tried third party drivers such as Gutenprint?

Since that is a postscript printer, the original PPD or the LW ppd will probably work just fine.
The "cannot connect" symptom is typical of a setup issue, not a driver issue.
IPP is newer than the printer, I think, so you should be using LPD or HP Jetdirect protocol. For LPD, you need to know what queue name the printer uses (probably in an original manual, it shows OS 8/9 setup with a queue name).
"RAW" was used as queue name on LW 8500.

I could get noting to work, so I set it up as a shared printer, sending it to a G5 running 10.5.

I've been able to get the same printer to work after upgrading to OS 10.6.5 on a small Ethernet network using LPD and the printers network address.

I was able to use the Xante driver downloaded from their web site, but after reading the posts above, I've gotten better results using the LaserWriter 8500 driver.

I'd welcome any further advice! The printer worked better with OS 10.4.
