No. The apple tv cannot be controlled by a universal remote.
Sean, you are AWESOME!!! DirecTV replaced my old remote and I programmed the new one for my TV, DVD player, and then it went downhill. Trying to reprogram the new remote for AppleTV kept giving me the **** message about the second button being programmed already. I used your disney code in the remote, then went to learn remote, and it took the new DirecTV remote AV1 like the old one did. I've been fighting this for the entire day (about 13 hours). Finally I searched google and it led me here. The search was "button already learned".
Thank you for fixing this for me.
And it involed my 1st Gen AppleTV.
Sincere regards,

Sean280X-
Your solution wotked like a charm for me. I've found it might not work on the first try, and you have to hold the button-to-be-programmed down until it either learns it or gives you and error message.
Disney makes a DVD? Who knew?
Now, if anyone can tell me what DirecTV Remote buttons to use for chapter skip forward and skip back, that would be swell. ONE REMOTE RULES THEM ALL.
Thanks!
Through trial and error I found that 22434 (a Phillips DVD code) has all of the buttons as the Disney DVD code plus support for the chapter advance and skip back buttons! My RC65 DirecTV remote now has working buttons for basic navigation and playback in AV1 mode. Very happy with the results!
