Is it possible to make a facetime call from an iPod Touch to a computer?

My iPod Touch 4G is now capable of video chat. My computer (and my long-distance girlfriend's computer) are capable of video chat. As far as I can tell, those devices are unable to communicate with each other. I use Skype to video chat computer to computer, and I thought my new iPod Touch 4G would be able to call her computer on the go (so long as I'm in a decent wifi network.) Skype doesn't seem to be able to access that camera, though, and does voice only when I call. Facetime can access that camera, but as far as I can tell is incapable of calling anyone using a device other than another iPod Touch or iPhone.

Is there any way for Facetime (or any other app I can download to my iPod Touch) to video chat with a regular computer? I don't understand why Apple would overlook this, if it's the case (and not just my inability to figure it out.) It seems basic that if I can video chat with another iPhone or iPod, I should be able to do the same with a properly equipped computer.

Thanks, iprod. I'm still trying to figure out what program I should ask my girlfriend to use on the computer (mac), though, that I can videochat to from Fring. We've always used Skype, and fring doesn't support skype. I can use it to call her phone, but it's voice only. I can use it to communicate via text/IM on a whole bunch of other services, and I can call other phones, or fring users (in theory, but as far as I know I don't have any friends on fring.)

Iprod, thanks for your suggestion. However, at the current time, Fring is unable to make video calls to a computer, only to other phones/ipods. It was clear early that it couldn't connect to Skype, but I had to ask Fring support to confirm that there was no other video-call program for computer that could connect with Fring. I like the interface better on AIM and Skype, so if I can't get video calls out of Fring I'm uninstalling it.

Yes it is possible. Since 20 October,2010 there is an Apple download for Face Time on your Mac., it is in beta format but it works ok. You can download from: www.apple.com/mac/facetime

This latter discussions page helped me do it correctly. Which is, one needs to make sure the the Apple ID and email address you register on your Mac is not the same email address you use on your iPod Touch otherwise it won't work. However,as you will see you must upgrade to Snow Leopard to be able to download Face Time for Mac (beta) and also include the software combo update to 10.6.4 as well to be able to do it.

Skype on the iPod touch does not have video yet but it will probably come in sometime.

Even as this post is a bit old, i hope that my post could help a lot of people looking for application to download to video chat with friends or family. A lot of people were having the issues like that with the new iPod touch 4G with the front-facing camera and it's problem of iPod-pc or mobile to pc video chats. Fring could it be a good option but as good things comes to an end, no longer fring supports video chats on skype due to problems between the companies. There is a application called tango video chat on the app store for free to download(however the app hasn't been updated to support the new 4G iPod touch). Fortunately apple on the event on october 20th, released a beta app for FaceTime communications between mobiles to to the macs. Luckily you have one more option, yahoo messenger App recently added support for video chats for the iPod touch 4G making easily to make iPod touch calls to regular computers or other mobile devices(that are capable of making video chat calls).

Cheers

The subject of this topic is make a "facetime" call to a computer.

YM is not FaceTime and cannot connect to FaceTime. I am happy YM works for you, but it does not respond to OP swagmonkey's request.
