Recorded Voice Memo won't play back

I've just recorded an important interview for a research project - I checked as it was recording and the little red bar with the counter was going. I stopped the recording at 38 minutes.

But when I go to play it back, the file won't play. It says it's 0 seconds long and iTunes isn't recognizing there's a new file when I try to sync the iPhone.

The file hasn't deleted itself because I can see it there- just says 0 seconds and won't actually play when I press play.

i have same problem with iphone 3gs with IOS 4. With Iphone explorer (application from www.macroplant.com/iphoneexplorer/ i found voice memo files in my iphone but the extension of memo file (normally .m8a) are abnormally .mov.
I have adjusted extension of the bad files to .m8a with iphone explorer and i can play back the memo.

I dont explain how the extension of the file are changed to .mov but with iPhone explorer i can recover the memo.

Please help. I have a recording that I need to recover. When I use IPhone Explorer I can see the recording as .mov. I have dragged it to the desktop and tried to open it with Quicktime. When I do that, I get an error message telling me that the file is not in a format that Quicktime recognizes and that I may need additional software to open the file.

Can anyone suggest a solution here? Thanks.

Here's what worked for me after trying everything else. Get the iphone explorer freeware (link below) and find your file under Media. You'll see that the file you need has probably got an extension of .mov rather than .m4a. Copy the file to your computer, and it will open as Quicktime. Or rename the extension and it will play as audio.

Good luck!

I've been having the same problem. I did a 12 minute interview, but on my iPhone 3G it just said 0 seconds.

I installed iPhone Explorer (now it's called iexplorer), and moved the 26 MB .mov file to my desktop. I opened it with quicktime, but only the first 13 seconds of it would play. I know there's gotta be more than that because the file is 26 MB. Why is this happening and how can I retrieve the full file?

Good to note that you are able to move the message and bring back to iphone to play on music player. However in my case - iPhone 3GS, software unlocked version- voice memo had stopped working in early November as recording was taking place in .mov format it could not be replayed except the first few seconds duration. Late December, I had some problem with my carrier signal as this was not getting connected and I had to hard shut down my iPhone 2-3 times. To my surprise Voice Memo app has started working and now I am able to record and play back. I have also managed to move the Voice Memo messages using iExplore to my computer and play them and archive them outside iPhone.

I hope this helps.
