Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

How do you turn it off?

Seriously. With the old 1G TV you could use the remote to put it into standby - hold down the menu button for about 4 seconds and then do the same with the play button. Awfully slow, but it did work (mostly). Can you put the new 2G into standby/sleep the same way? Or is there another way, or have Apple forced you to use the menus?

That last would be a right royal PIA as there would be no way to use a universal remote to put it into standby:-(

Anyone confirm either way?

MacPro, MacBook Pro, Mini Server, TVs, iPad, iPhone 4, Mac OS X (10.6.4), 30" HD display,

You just press and hold the middle button for about a second - hey presto it goes off.

Sounds better than the 1G, but does that work whatever you are doing at the time, or only when you're actually at the main Menu?

Also, does it go into Standby or just turn off the display?

Actually, what would be most helpful is for Apple to realise the importance of implementing true ON and OFF discreet IR commands for any device such as this as it is of PARAMOUNT importance to using it with a universal remote and let's face it, Apple expect this device to be used in an environment that typically would be controlled by a universal remote.

No, it's not of paramount importance. You're missing a key factor here. THERE'S NO REASON TO TURN IT OFF/PUT IT IN STANDBY. Sorry to shout, but why do any devices have distinct on/off states? Merely to save energy, correct? Well the Apple TV uses about 2 Watts in the on state. (I happen to have a Kill A Watt meter to test these things with, but feel free to do a Google search on it)

Let's do the math:
2 Watts usage x 24 hours / 1000 = 0.048 kWh per day.
My electricity usage rate is currently $0.12611/kWh.
0.048 x 0.12611 = $0.00605328 cost per day to run an Apple TV 2 in the on state. *Less than a PENNY!*

Multiply by 365 and that shows it will cost $2.21 in electricity costs at the current rate to run an ATV. BTW, it uses 1 W *in sleep state* so even if you stress over turning it on/off, you'll only save $1 in a year!

The short answer is: don't worry about it. Even the automatic standby feature is overkill.

Not strictly true--at least with the current incarnation of the firmware. Often my ATV2 will 'forget' to send 5.1 audio and will revert to two channel PCM. The only way I've found to correct this issue is to put it to sleep and upon re-awakening it once again sends 5.1 correctly. A single button 'sleep' command is far easier than always navigating the menu's.

are you saying you actually want a dedicated sleep button on the remote ?

No, I just wasn't aware that holding the center button down would put it to sleep until I read it in this thread. That works fine for me and also works fine with my Harmony 720.

Whats the key press for SLEEP?

press and hole play/pause for 3-5 seconds.

How are you getting on with your new one now Chenks?

still in the box. i gave it another 30 minute try with a video playlist and it failed at that basic tasks.
i'm either going to sell it, or wait for some magical software update that makes it perform at least as well as the 2 original appletv's i have.

Chenks,
Exactly what is wrong with the video playlist? I have lots of video playlists streaming on my AppleTV 1. Will they work on AppleTV 2 under the "TV Shows" Category?

the playlists show up, but the appletv2 stops playing after the first item, so essentially the playlist is useless.
