iPhone 4 without Data plan.

Hi,
Canadian here.
I am interested in purchasing the iPhone4 outright from an applestore (unlocked/750 dollars)

I currently have a standard phone plan with calling, text, voicemail but no data.

What I was wondering, is will my current carrier (rogers) be able to put my standard phone plan onto a micro sim so I can use the iPhone4 without data. I only want the phone for calling and text and do not need email or 3G internet. I know with a 3gs you can just put your sim in the phone and use the standard phone plan no problem but will rogers be willing to put a standard plan onto this new type of sim or will they be fussy and say that microsims only work for data plans?

Help please!! I don't want to buy the phone and find out after that i cant use it unless im paying 80+ dollars a month for unneeded data

All iPhones in the USA require an iPhone data plan. I suspect it's the same in Canada. Check with your carrier.

Call Rogers and ask for a replacement micro-sim - If it's not available (or Roger isn't willing to provide it) buy a $20 micro sim puncher on ebay or amazon and trim your old sim

No it's not - You may buy contract free - non carrier locked iPhones in CA

Is a micro sim really just a standard sim that is trimmed down? The gold sim plate is still the same size?

yes the gold plate is still the same size.

In any case, it's better to have a data plan, without it, you might get charged a lot for surfing on the net or an app that requires 3G. Unless you plan to use wi-fi the entire time.

It's exactly the same - using myself such a "punched out" micro sim on my iPad without any troubles.

Non locked iPhone will work with any sim: Voice only, Data only, prepaid ...

Used my non locked iPhone this Summer in Canada with a voice only pay-as-you-go sim without any probs

Im in Canada on Telus using a "standard" phone package on my new iPhone 4. My package included voice, caller id and sms; to put this on a microsim all I had to do was go down to a local store and buy the card. From there I just phoned up Telus and said I wanted to activate the microsim on my account replacing my current phone. (Might charge you for this, bug them and try to get it cheaper) After that I just put it into my iPhone, connected it to iTunes and everything worked perfectly.

Rogers doesn't stop customers from buying the iPhone at full price on no term from Apple without subscribing to a data plan. You can subscribe to a data day pass but this can be more costly than adding a smartphone data plan. They no longer block just data for customers that request it. If a customers uses data they are responsible for their usage. If though you want to buy a subsidized smartphone such as the iPhone from Rogers you will be required to subscribe to a voice and data plan on a 3 year term commitment with maximum ECF $500.00 CDN.

Not having data is nowhere near the same as using it like a regular dumb phone. It turns it into an iPod Touch with phone abliities. Still can use WiFi and downloa and sync apps through itunes.

I want the iPhone without data plan as well. Mainly because I am waiting for data to get cheaper and don't want to be a sucker to the Canadian telecommunications cartell. If we keep buying at their exorbitant prices (Canada has the highest rates in the world), things will never change.

telus introduced a data+txt messaging plan for prepaid people yesterday, its 20 bucks a month, you get 250mbs of data and unlimited sent and received txt msgs
