iPhone 4 - Broken glass

So today I had my iPhone in the pocket, and it dropped in a height of 40 cm +-, I don't know how but the front glass broke, up, in the right corner.
Since I live in Brazil, and things here are waaaaaay expensive, I called Apple's official technical support (only one, in the whole country), I've been told it costs around R$925,00 (around 550 dollars), and an iPhone here is 1000 dollars.

So I was wondering, any way to repair it under the warranty?

The iPhone warranty doesn't cover accidental damage.

You can search the web for another company that can repair the iPhone.

Today I bought a new iPhone 4. It was my second in 6 weeks. My prior phone was stolen last week. I was not able to get the subsidized price, so had to pay $399 for the replacement phone.

So, 8 hours after I got the new one, it slipped out of my pocket and the back glass shattered. Will I really have to now spend another $199+ to get this fixed? This is insane! Why would a phone so easily shatter?

I'm curious how many complaints that Apple has received on this subject. The iPhone repair shop that just replaced my 2nd windshield on my phone (in 30 days) said business is booming on replacing the iPhone 4 glass. I would suggest that high speed trains and military helicopters invest in a "bumper' or 'otter case' if the quality is the same as this phone.

Apple was absolutely no help. Completely ignored my email to Feedback and there does not appear to be a place to issue a formal complaint.

VERY DISAPPOINTED.

In the US it's USD $199.00 to replace an iPhone 4 with broken back or front glass. I believe this is a flat rate at apple store.

The other way is to pay like ~$20 USD to get the glass panel and do it yourself at your own risk.

Whatever you do, try to fix it ASAP as the unit is not meant to function with the glass compromised. Till you can get a proper fix i recommend wrapping it once around CAREFULLY with clear box tape.

Also, get a case hm?

I broke the front glass on my iPhone 4 yesterday (March 12th, 2011) and took the phone back to the local Apple Store. The Apple Genius asked me how long I'd owned the phone and I told him I bought it on launch day. He then said that Apple would swap the unit immediately at no cost. Mind you, I didn't have Apple Care on my iPhone 4 either, they just immediately swapped the phone for me, no questions asked and at no cost. I didn't expect this treatment but needless to say, I was extremely pleased.

When I broke the glass, I pulled out my old iPhone 3G and thought I'd swap the SIM card from my iPhone 4 over, use my 3G and send my iPhone 4 off to be repaired. The problem was, the iPhone 4's use the new micro-SIM cards and the 3G's use the older, larger SIMs. I went to the Apple store to find an adapter and instead, I got a new phone without even asking for it. The Apple Genius did tell me that this is a one-time replacement and if I broke the glass again, it would cost me.

Hence, I'm not sure what to make of the varying experiences I'm reading about in this thread but I was extremely pleased with how Apple handled my cracked screen.

Correction: The broken back panel only costs $29.00 to replace, and they can just replace the back panel and not just the whole unit. If the front glass was broken, then yes, it would cost $199.00 and they will replace the whole unit.

To both replies to my reply, my information comes from the mouth of apple iPhone support from a phone call 3 hours ago. Yes, the store staff has some freedom in what they will do in a "one time only" basis, however, it is not some set thing in that situation. They have tools to pull apart iPhones in their repair shops in the "back". They usually opt to swap out phone for phone, but as you stated it can vary.

The apple store geniuses can do some amazing things, but it's never a set thing for that to happen to you on your visit.

Edit: just called apple store in cherry hill, nj (after trying all 3 manhattan & 2 in PA) and they said they do replace just the back glass on a case by case basis & they did not offer a price.

What's going on, my first phone broken ever, promising protected glass. this is the biggest joke.
Such an expensive phone, with such a big fault.
I am not going to pay 199,- dollar. this is not good.
I dropped many phones over 15 years and this one breaks after two weeks. i have been extra careful after stories about the phone breaking in no time.
Someone has similar experience.
I feel so ripped off. Apple has lost it's juice on this one. I wish it just did not happen. my dream broke as the glass did.
I hope they can have better repair deals for the front. i loved the phone.
Have a contract for another 22 months 50 dollar a month!!
i can't believe this.

It's glass. Nobody promised "protected glass". If you can show this, take legal action.

And before anyone goes off about that Gorilla Glass, it's more resilient, but it's still...GLASS.
