Imaging from G5 to Intel

Hi, not sure where to post this. Mods, please move to the correct board if necessary.

I have an older G5 Mac that will be upgraded to a new Mac Pro. I was wanting to creat a DMG image of the G5 and restoring it to the Mac Pro. Would there be any problems doing this? Is it not possible?

You can but you can't use it as a system, you can of course use data and prefs (email, bookmarks etc). The systems (PPC to Intel) don't and applications need to be reinstalled.

You can use the old drive and copy off the contents and then reformat to GUID so it will be compatible in Mac Pro.

Don't use Migration Assistant for applications, that causes problems going from G5 to Mac Pro.

CONGRATS of course are in order!

Yes, there is a problem. The new Mac Pro requires a newer operating system then you can have on the G5, hence you can restore as you wish to do.

I would suggest that you clone the system drive of the G5 to an external drive. Then on the initial startup of the Mac Pro run Setup Assistant. Point it at the drive with the clone and it should restore everything for you.

And it isn't just because it's newer, but also because the Mac Pro uses Intel-based CPUs. A PowerPC-based G5 system simply doesn't contain the Intel code that can run a Mac Pro.

That is, it will restore everything it can. It will do its best to move your documents and settings into the new Intel system, but you will probably find that you still need to adjust or re-enter a few settings here and there. As The Hatter pointed out, for applications it is best for you to reinstall them from the original media, and preferably you have upgraded to Intel versions of the software so that you get the best performance out of them on a Mac Pro.

There are different opinions here about what procedure to use when going from a PPC to a new Mac. The current SetUp Assistant is a lot smarter about compatibility issues than it used to be, and my own vote would be to use it to transfer everything on first boot of the new Mac. That worked well for me and some others - see this very recent thread:

You don't need to make a clone on an external drive in order to use SetUp Assistant on first boot - all you need is a FireWire cable so that you can connect the G5 via FireWire Target Disk Mode. The new Mac's SetUp Assistant will give you on-screen instructions for this type of transfer.
