Turn off FaceTime and get way better battery life

To everyone here who is complaining about poor battery life, i have done numerous case studies and trial by error over the past 2 weeks and have found that if you *turn off Facetime when not using it will in fact increase your battery life tremendously*. I have 3G on, Location On and with about 5-6 hours of usage i get 3 days of standby, straight. With Facetime on, it drops to about 1.5 days. So you do the math, if you're not using facetime, turn it off!!

p.s. i have personally tested this myself.

I don't beleave you.

Face time should have no effect on battery life if you are not activly using it

This makes sense! Turning off FaceTime probably stops iPhone 4s/iPod Touch 4Gs from pinging Apple's servers and letting Apple know what WiFi is being used when someone wants to connect using FaceTime.

Unfortunately, I use FaceTime at least once a day at a minimum and won't want the hassle of turning it on and off regularly, but this tip will come in handy when traveling.

well if this is the case, I'm going to give this a test, I have just turned off the facetime feature because I don't use this feature at all.

Forget it. I just figured it out. I also have a full charge so I turned on 3G, location services to see if this will really last three days. Personally I am betting on 12 hours.

This seems to have solved my problems with usage time increase in standby and phantom cell data transfer!! (See my post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2606784&tstart=0).

Just turning off facetime the usage time when in standby reduced from 10min per hour to 1 min or less per hour. Also no cell data have been transmitted or received. I haven't check battery performance but I'm sure it will be better now.

It would be good to know if this is a generalized problem among iphones and carriers or not. I think that most likely is a software/carrier issue.

glad to know it has helped you mate. Thought i'd share this tip, besides you only should turn on facetime when you want to use it. I think with it being on all the time, it's pinging the servers for a wifi connection and this affects battery life a lot. Cheers.

Yes, it seems that facetime uses a similar amount of battery power than having email push or notifications on. It's weird that this is not stated in apple's battery page (http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html) so I still think this could be a bug affecting only some people. Since facetime is wifi only there is no reason for it to use cell data as I see is doing.

Yar i already noe this problem as there was one times, i went to on facetime in e settin, my battery % went down very fast!

I just noticed that people reporting bad battery life related to enabling facetime are all from outside the US. Maybe the problem is related to bad carrier configuration? Is there anybody in the US with an AT&T iphone noticing this issue?

Why do people want to turn off certain features, by having one the best phones around, if not the best. People you paid good money and for the service. Use what you paid for.

I agree. For long excursions I recommend using an external battery such as Mophie Juice Pack Air, Mili Power Spring, etc.

How are your posts relevant to this thread? Turning features off is quite a pity but apparently necessary to get a decent battery life with your iphone.
