Q: Apple TV HD Rental Streaming Problem

I wanted to create this topic to ask if others are running into the same issues I am with streaming rented HD movies. I go to play the rented HD movie and am transferred to a screen that says "Loading...." for about a minute or two. Then, that message is replaced with one that says "Ready to play in [xxx] minutes"...with horribly long times listed (my movie was rented last night, and as of this evening, it shows "Ready to play in 232 minutes").

This seems like a MAJOR flaw with the Apple TV. I have no problem viewing YouTube, HD Netflix movies, HD trailers, etc. I have even been able to watch an HD TV show rental within about 5 mins of selecting it. Seems like there may be a major flaw in the streaming process for HD Movie rentals over the Apple TV.

If you haven't tested this yet (or if you have no issues), please post what is happening with your HD movie rentals.

TWP

Note: I have rebooted everything, used my Airport Express with the ethernet cord directly into the Apple TV, over wiFi, adjusted the distance between my router and the Apple TV. Nothing has worked.

If your pressing menu by mistake then it isn't a problem, but if you are legitimately pressing pause then yes. Talk to support in that case and report the issue.

Same thing happened to me after hitting pause. The movie would not resume!

I spent over 90 minutes on the phone w/ support and there reaction was like I was the first one w/ this problem ........now have an open file w/ them for 3 weeks and they are not getting back to me w/ the fix
I think it is obvious that they don't have the answer yet .

Not sure what to tell you. Mine pause and resume fine, also not sure what would be causing it. Maybe someone else can chime in who has experience with this one.

Havent posted to this topic in a while, but have been watching with interest. My wife downloaded SATC 2 today. Download start about 9 hours ago (which we have learnt to live with). Anyway she started watching it about 1 hour ago. Paused the movie for about 10 minutes, came back and guess what....Movie was gone and replaced with a message ready to play in 8 hours 32 minutes. Come on Apple, the BUFFER is not working correctly. This is so evident by what has just happened. I genuinely think its time we started returning these ATV's and demanding our money back. Then Apple may take it seriously.

This seems to be a problem with how the new Apple TV is talking back to Apple's home base. Big problems afoot here for many. Seems like a software issue that will hopefully be fixed sooner than later. Guess I should have held onto my original AppleTV!!! Never had any issues with that one.

Apple TV 2 problems I've experienced so far...

    - hours of waiting to start movies. That said I have watched two HD films that worked fine...I did however have to ask for a refund for 5 films so far. Not a good ratio Apple. I highly recommend to everyone experiencing the problem to report the issue and ask for your money back if you experience delays or other glitches that prevent you from watching your film. It's easy to do and sends a strong message to Apple that something is wrong. When Apple sends you your receipt via email look for the REPORT A PROBLEM BUTTON. COMPLAIN and demand your money back! They've refunded me each time or resent me the movie again.

    - glitches when fast forwarding or rewinding which causes me to be booted out of the movie, which than needs to be reauthorized, which starts the long waiting periods again!!!!

    - problems with home sharing. When I select my computer from the Apple TV I have to wait minutes before it will show up. Music streams fine but when I select the MOVIE category I have to wait several minutes for it to process to the next screen. When I am able to select a movie from my home library it won't play right away. What's odd is If I use my iPad as a remote I can drill down very quickly to what I want to watch (using HOME SHARING on the AppleTV) and when I select a film it starts streaming instantly. Seems like a major software flaw in the APPLE TV itself!

I have the highest speed internet offered in Canada. I use an Airport extreme that my APPLE TV is hardwired to via ethernet.

All my software across computers / network / AppleTV and portables are up to date.

I never had these issues with the original APPLE TV.
I am disappointed to be an Apple fanboy these days!

Sorry to hear that. If you are with Rogers that could also be part of the problem. They are really bad in regards to throttling etc.

Cogeco isn't great but thankfully no problems (touch wood)

Yes Rogers is TERRIBLE for that. I'm keeping an eye on them. Next time I have issue with renting a film I'll run SPEEDTEST.NET to see what my service is like. Unfortunately it doesn't explain my other issue with my HOME SHARING. I just want it to work!

Yes you're right, and I don't do home-sharing that much nor do I have a big library (which is where people seem to be running into the problem) so haven't run into anything.

As soon as one of the smaller companies provides service in my area i'm going to switch, I hate having to monitor my usage because of the bandwidth cap.

    Hi all,
It's 100% clear from the volume of posts in this topic, that there's a problem here ... both in the long downloads of HD movies, and when you do a pause/play and are blessed with another 4 hour download. I'm experiencing the same.

What surprises me, as a recent "convert" to the Apple world, is that I have not read any replies from APPLE in this Apple forum, on this matter. I really don't think we need any new postings of people with the same problem. That matter is now well understood.

Does Apple not comment in these discussions, or just in this particular case?

    Two thoughts:
    1. I wonder if this started with the recent 4.2 iPad upgrade and related AppleTV software update?
    2. Anyone know if renting HD movie on the iPad via iTunes and playing over AppleTv will be an acceptable workaround?

    Stuart

Here's a number that iTunes support gave me to call to talk to an "ATV expert" everyone should call to get their attention on this problem.

Thanks for clarifying. So, given this thread has established every aspect of the problem, what's the route to bring it to Apple's attention and get their help/response/position on the matter?

Note: I just watched a non HD movie and it was immediate. HD trailers are also more or less immediate.

the fact that a non HD movie worked fine does suggest that you have bandwidth issues that cause HD movies to be problematic (be it ISP related or internal network related).

however, if you do want to contact apple support, you do it via http://www.apple.com/support/appletv/contact/

i see you are in Israel, does your local itunes store even have HD movie rentals? (I already know it doesn't so just wondered how you know HD movies don't work).

The Bandwidth issue does not explain movies not remaining in the 8GB buffer, this is obviously a software issue for Apple as well. Downloading SATC 2 for my wife for the past 33 hours is nothing to do with my bandwidth externally of internally. I think all will become apparent with a software update
