Q: Apple TV HD Rental Streaming Problem

I wanted to create this topic to ask if others are running into the same issues I am with streaming rented HD movies. I go to play the rented HD movie and am transferred to a screen that says "Loading...." for about a minute or two. Then, that message is replaced with one that says "Ready to play in [xxx] minutes"...with horribly long times listed (my movie was rented last night, and as of this evening, it shows "Ready to play in 232 minutes").

This seems like a MAJOR flaw with the Apple TV. I have no problem viewing YouTube, HD Netflix movies, HD trailers, etc. I have even been able to watch an HD TV show rental within about 5 mins of selecting it. Seems like there may be a major flaw in the streaming process for HD Movie rentals over the Apple TV.

If you haven't tested this yet (or if you have no issues), please post what is happening with your HD movie rentals.

Note: I have rebooted everything, used my Airport Express with the ethernet cord directly into the Apple TV, over wiFi, adjusted the distance between my router and the Apple TV. Nothing has worked.

Is it possible to revert the software back to 4.1?

I decided to try a restore and apply the update again. It took 45 minutes just to download the update. How big is this update? Did others experience the same time for the download? I have a 6 Mb/s cable connection and I cannot imagine the update was so big as to require 45 minutes at this speed. It seems to me that the Apple TV wireless bandwidth post 4.1.1 is terrible and the root of most of these problems.

There is definitely something wrong there, it took maybe 2-3 minutes to download and then a another few minutes to apply for me. If you are using wireless there could be some interference.

This is almost certainly a bandwidth bottleneck upstream of either the CPE (us) or immediate ISP (cable provider, etc.). My suspicion is that with the holiday season there are a large number of folks trying to stream content. It's probably overloading their content delivery systems (mainly Akamai).

I'm seeing the same issue recently (haven't seen it before tonight) and it is NOT my home network and it is NOT my upstream provider (Cox). Everything else is working just fine. Apple and Akamai are overloaded is my guess.

I have both and the AT1 starts playing a rented or bought movie in about 5 minutes. AT2 takes hours. As stated earlier I'm also using my ISP's DNS. Although it seems not everyone is effected, it is clearly a divice problem. I have the same problem with Netflix. It will not stream HD movies while my Blueray player which also has Netflix starts streaming in about 10 seconds.

I dumped my ATV1 so I could get the new one. I sat down a moment ago, rented The Kids Are All Right, and it said it would be ready to play in 7 hours and 45 minutes! When I rented HD movies on the first generation ATV, it would take a few minutes (less for standard def) before it was ready to play, but this is ridiculous. This must be a device problem because I have no other issues on my wireless network, and even Netflix on the ATV2 works flawlessly. Any tips?

I can not play a rented movie if it is larger than 1gig. I rented a Thomas the train movie for my son. Worked good, loaded quick. I tried to rent The Expendables HD could not even get it to start. I keep getting an error message when I try to play it. Also same with the movie Flubber in SD but just over 1gig.
    It is very annoying.

I have 50 Megabit/second download speed. I'm sure it ranks in the top 1% of all internet speeds in the USA. And yet, I have the same ridiculous problem of having to wait, wait, wait to watch a movie. Apple take note! So, if the Apple TV doesn't work with the top 1% of the internet speed households just exactly who could use this product? FYI I purchased the Apple TV the day it was announced and for the first month after I got it the thing worked at blazing speeds. I can only conclude that Apple servers are getting more and more swamped. Maybe it's time for them to fire up that $2 billion dollar server farm they just built in NC?

I'm on a very fast Comcast cable internet plan and have had iTunes streaming problems since the first day I got the ATV2. Changing the DNS on my router from Google DNS to OpenDNS didn't fix the streaming problem. I then tried using the local DNS from Comcast and it fixed the problem. Everything in the iTunes movie rental store now streams and starts playing within about 5 seconds. I rented a HD movie last night and it started playing immediately for the first time ever.

Changing the DNS settings in my router from Google and OpenDNS to my local ISP DNS definitely fixed the problem for me and you may want to give this a try to see if it works for you. If you are on Comcast, the DNS servers can be found on http://dns.comcast.net/dns-ip-addresses.php

using my ISP's default settings (haven't changed anything), downloading only SD videos, same issues as everyone else, long delays, lots of stopping during movies, etc. Netflix works fine on the Apple TV 2. Apple TV 1 works fine, all computers in house access sites fine, only issue is with Apple TV.

I had the exact same problems until I changed the DNS settings on my Apple Extreme router. You may want to try a few different ones on this list to see if it helps.

fwiw - I'm in the SF Bay Area and am using the San Francisco Bay Area DNS settings 68.87.76.182, 68.87.78.134 which fixed the problem for me (was previously on Google DNS 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4)

I have found out what my problem was. My isp had a choke on anything over 1 gig is size. It would not download movies from itunes. The support people did not even know it was there. Apple called my isp and got to talk to the guy in charge of wireless internet and he admitted to a block on the size of the download. This may be happening to you guys as well. They may slow your speed if they think you are doing p2p. This may also explain why netflix works, I could stream live content off the web if the total size was not known. I am not sure on netflix but I think it streams from there base like a live stream, where Itunes content must download. I am not be right but it may be worth a talk to your ISP.

Maybe Apple can call Clear (my ISP) for me. I am also having streaming delays (very very long delays). What do you think?
