Q: Apple TV HD Rental Streaming Problem

I wanted to create this topic to ask if others are running into the same issues I am with streaming rented HD movies. I go to play the rented HD movie and am transferred to a screen that says "Loading...." for about a minute or two. Then, that message is replaced with one that says "Ready to play in [xxx] minutes"...with horribly long times listed (my movie was rented last night, and as of this evening, it shows "Ready to play in 232 minutes").

This seems like a MAJOR flaw with the Apple TV. I have no problem viewing YouTube, HD Netflix movies, HD trailers, etc. I have even been able to watch an HD TV show rental within about 5 mins of selecting it. Seems like there may be a major flaw in the streaming process for HD Movie rentals over the Apple TV.

If you haven't tested this yet (or if you have no issues), please post what is happening with your HD movie rentals.

Note: I have rebooted everything, used my Airport Express with the ethernet cord directly into the Apple TV, over wiFi, adjusted the distance between my router and the Apple TV. Nothing has worked.

I just thought I'd drop in and report my recent experience with the AppleTV. We finally got around to renting a HD movie yesterday and while the download speeds still seem a little pokey, given my DSL connection, they're not insane. More importantly, the issue with the movies not saving to the AppleTV's buffer seems to have been fixed with the most recent update, so... at least for us... the AppleTV now seems to be working the way it did before the 4.2 update, which is great news. I am much more happy with my AppleTV than I was.

I hope the rest of you find some solutions soon.

Yep, the release notes said the latest update was supposed to fix the bug where the movie downloads were not being saved and stored correctly and it appears it works correctly now. Should be good news for those with slow download speeds as once it is there, they should be able to watch without interruptions.

    Hi,

it seems as if I'm also suffering from the problem that hd movie rentals stream slowly. I'm located at germany, using an apple tv 2 with latest update available, and my isp is German Telekom VSDL with 50mbit downstream.

On Dec 25th I rented the hd movie "Inception" at 7 pm gmt+1, expecting the playback to start 4-5 min after renting. Instead, my apple tv also showed up with an estimated time to start in about 4-5 hours. A DSL speed test from my macbook using wifi in a distance of 1 meter to the apple tv indicated a downstream of min. 10MBit. I use my isps DNS.

I'm quite disappointed now, and will try to contact the support hotline tomorrow. If they won't offer a solution for me, I sadly need to say that I want to give my appletv back to apple. I hope this will work, because I already ordered it by the end of November.

I hope that apple has a solution for our problem. Worst Apple product by now. I own several iPods, a Macbook, Ipad, iPhone 4 and further products...

    Best regards,

The problem seems to be fixed, I haven't rented a movie yet but I can watch all the previews I want. Anyone else?

    Hey all,

I still don't think it us fixed. I can stream a preview within seconds on my 2.5 Mbps talktalk broadband but takes at least 2 hours to watch a movie. Can't see why there would a difference.

That would be a pretty normal experience at 2.5mbps

That would not explain the difference in the time required play previews and the main movie. The broadband connection is constant, the apple tv experience is not.

There is a big difference between a 2 minute preview and a 2 hour movie. If you want to watch an HD movie you need 5mbps minimum. I suggest a bit more to be safe, I have 7 and movies always start after 5 seconds.

I hewhat you are saying but there are people who have posted in thus topic who have greater download speeds than what you mention and they still have excessive buffeting times for the main movie compared to previews. A lot of people are suggesting that netflex has a better buffer speed than the apple service, obviously don't have that here in Scotland. Don't get me wrong I lime apple tv with it's additional features but I still believe there is something not working as it should be whether it be apple, the ISP provider or the line speed.

Yes, there are different factors to consider (throttling, wifi, dns etc). But i'm referring to your situation. Netflix degrades quality and compresses more.

This thread has been going since October. And apple has not stepped up the the plate to resolve the problem. Or even a mention "were working on it" There are numerous threads about this problem on this site as well as other sites. But still no fix. As advertised, "watch HD movies instantly" Not so. I have no problem watching a HD TV show, You-tube, netflix, etc... So whats the problem with watching a movie apple? The first apple TV didn't have these problems watching a movie. So, what changed? Sure, You-tube and netflix stream differently but at least that works.... And I can do that on my game system, in 1080.

How long is the average HD rental taking to download? After four hours we have watched half of a movie. Really apple? You expect people to pay for this? Awful. Will be returning the new Apple Tv to the store tomorrow.

I watched my first movie since upgrading to the newest software version last night. It was an SD Movie, but it ran just fine. We've had trouble in the past, but those were all SD ones as well. At least from my perspective, the newest software update appears to have fixed the problem.

ok - add me to the long list of unsatisfied apple consumers. have had exactly same experience as everyone else. ordered hd movie which immediately goes to "loading" phase where we are blown away with the 11 hour wait. ok, figure we can work with system so let it ride over night. come back 24 hours later to watch the movie, press play, get the pinwheel and nothing happens. go do some stuff and about 20 mins later, it starts up. excited, sit on the couch and after opening credits, it stops and back with pinwheel. pressed pause, put a dvd in, finished it, and the rental is still loading up! left it overnight and havent touched the atv all day so hope it works tonight. my 5th apple product and it is a total joke. somebody do something.
