Q: Apple TV HD Rental Streaming Problem

I wanted to create this topic to ask if others are running into the same issues I am with streaming rented HD movies. I go to play the rented HD movie and am transferred to a screen that says "Loading...." for about a minute or two. Then, that message is replaced with one that says "Ready to play in [xxx] minutes"...with horribly long times listed (my movie was rented last night, and as of this evening, it shows "Ready to play in 232 minutes").

This seems like a MAJOR flaw with the Apple TV. I have no problem viewing YouTube, HD Netflix movies, HD trailers, etc. I have even been able to watch an HD TV show rental within about 5 mins of selecting it. Seems like there may be a major flaw in the streaming process for HD Movie rentals over the Apple TV.

If you haven't tested this yet (or if you have no issues), please post what is happening with your HD movie rentals.

TWP

Note: I have rebooted everything, used my Airport Express with the ethernet cord directly into the Apple TV, over wiFi, adjusted the distance between my router and the Apple TV. Nothing has worked.

I have 4.3 installed on my AppleTV and it does not fix the issue.

That's a shame. I installed it, as well and prior to install, movie rentals were taking any where from 8-16 hours to play. Theatrical trailers were taking 30 minutes to stream ... regular previews seem to take ages as well. Netflix seemed fine though.

Now after the update, HD movie rentals from iTunes are ready to play in 5 minutes. This is pretty much where I was at before when I first got the AppleTV 2 on release day last year .... so my conclusion was the iOS update did it .. and Apple support seemed to confirm this too.

I guess I'll have to try to reboot and reinstall, and give it another shot.

Spent an hour on the phone with apple care regarding the unacceptably slow download times on my apple tv2. Determined it was likely the apple tv so he made an appointment at my local apple store where they tested the atv. Said that there was nothing wrong with the hardware but gave me an exchange anyway. Came home, same problem. My old apple tv works flawlessly. This new one is a hockey puck now. The apple store genius said i was the 6th person this week that he dealt with regarding slow download times so apparently this is a common problem. Does anyone have one that actually works? My old apple tv is literally ready to stream an HD movie in less than 60 seconds regardless of the time of day. This is how I would expect the device to work. Wonder if this will ever get fixed...

How are you guys getting 4.3? Mine is 4.1 and when I do an update, atv tells me that the unit is up to date.

Mine is simply 4.1. However, I have noticed in the last few days that there have been changes in the layout when browsing titles. So obviously something in the software has changed without running an update.

I hope it works for you @tasandkrs. Now that mine is working fine, I'm no longer going to apply any more iOS updates until folks have validated that they don't introduce issues. Its almost like you need two appletv's. One for testing, and one for day to day operation. Maybe that was Apple's long term plan to get everyone to buy two.

    Mine works--some of the time.

It took my first movie hours, days, to load. After the first rental, it has taken only a few minutes to load movies, with one exception, which also required two days. Aside from these two movies, all Apple downloads have been fine (knock on wood). However, unlike the experience of others, I find that NetFlix movies tend to stall and stutter and are unable to keep pace with the buffering, even though these have all been standard definition titles.

My speed averages just under 3 Mbps, although I pay for something more than that (typical).

The slow speeds I'm experiencing are exclusive to 2nd generation ATV's. My 1st generation has no delays while both of my new ATV's seem to be communicating on 56k modems?? I'm completely wired with a 16 mbps connection but it wasn't until I did several side by side comparisons that I was convinced it was the new ATV itself that was source of the slow download speeds.

Is there ANY indication at all that Apple is hearing this? They should be embarrassed.

Same problem here. 2nd gen apple tv worked great for a few weeks but last night we saw the dreaded "loading.... ready in 5hrs.." message repeatedly when trying to rent a movie. Other providers stream fine thru the apple tv. Same problem tonight. We're now watching the same movie in higher def for a better price thru Vudu. I haven't read thru all the replies, but I was on the phone with Apple just 2 weeks ago and I know all software was up to date at that time. Very disappointing....

I just got an Apple TV and experienced the same problems that you did. My work-around suggestion - don't rent from Apple. There are other movie venues that you can connect to other than Apple Store. Chances are your TV can connect to the Internet through your home network and you can rent movies that way.

At least one good thing for me - I get Triple M radio!

I had the same problem, i was trying to watch movies in the evening and it was really slow so i tried to watch one during the day and it worked ok so it must be the download speed at peek times.
