Q: Apple TV HD Rental Streaming Problem

I wanted to create this topic to ask if others are running into the same issues I am with streaming rented HD movies. I go to play the rented HD movie and am transferred to a screen that says "Loading...." for about a minute or two. Then, that message is replaced with one that says "Ready to play in [xxx] minutes"...with horribly long times listed (my movie was rented last night, and as of this evening, it shows "Ready to play in 232 minutes").

This seems like a MAJOR flaw with the Apple TV. I have no problem viewing YouTube, HD Netflix movies, HD trailers, etc. I have even been able to watch an HD TV show rental within about 5 mins of selecting it. Seems like there may be a major flaw in the streaming process for HD Movie rentals over the Apple TV.

If you haven't tested this yet (or if you have no issues), please post what is happening with your HD movie rentals.

TWP

Note: I have rebooted everything, used my Airport Express with the ethernet cord directly into the Apple TV, over wiFi, adjusted the distance between my router and the Apple TV. Nothing has worked.

I have a Cisco Lynxsys router and after several pointers notably from Andrew that the router maybe the problem I sought advice from CISCO and was told to diasable in the properties of the local Area Internet connection Internet Protocol 6 (TCP/IVP6). Just a little tick in a box and the movie we watched tonight downloaded in nano seconds and web browsing on the PC is much faster too. Crossed fingers and hope it lasts more than a day and that someone else can use this workaround.

Vincent that might just be the fix I need!!!  Dealing with this on off working I've noticed that if I restart my Time Machine ATV2 will start working just fine again.  Any ideas on how to find those numbers on a Time Machine?

I ahve read thru all the posts as I had purchased Apple TV2 last xmas and have had all the same problems and have continued to try different things including switching to Shaw Broadband and still not working.  Magic Slim - you indicate to "diasable in the properties of the local Area Internet connection Internet Protocol 6 (TCP/IVP6). "  Do you do this thru Apple TV or thru your Computer?

Thanks in advance - any advice would be greatly apprecitated

Here's what I did, FWIW.  In your Mac (presuming that's what you have), go to System Preferences>Network (Airport)>Advanced>TCP/IP>Configure IPV6>select "OFF".  I am still testing this fix, but it seems to have helped.  Too, I changed channels in the Airport Extreme to "11".

Thnaks for the message and yes I am using a MAC.  I went to System preferences and "advanced" settings and on waht I see on screen for the "configure IPv6 are the following choices - "automatically", "manually" or "link-local only" - I do not get a choice of "off".  Is there somewhere else I should look?

When I go directly through Airport Utility, that's the menu I get, too.  But going through system preferences gives me the "off" option (I am running Snow Leopard).  However, while I was initially hopeful that turning IPV6 off would make a difference, it is now clear to me that it hasn't.  Last night, I attempted to stream a movie over iTunes and then one over Netflix.  Neither worked — unless I was willing to wait 234 hours and 6 minutes.  Yet, previews streamed nicely.  So, I wouldn't worry about IPV6, unless others here are convinced that it makes a difference.  I will return to my work-around solution — download a movie to my iPad or iPhone and then use Airplay to strream it directly to the TV.  That works great — though Netflix films can't be downloaded; they must be streamed through the ATV2 (when it works).

One of the posts on this subject says that no-one has heard from Apple on this problem everyone appears to be having.  Why doesn't everyone return their Apple TV2, and see how long it takes for Apple to take notice.  Shouldn't be an inconvenience folks.  The device appears to be pretty much useless from what I'm reading.

Cobrattack Sorry it took me so long to get back with you:

1.Go to your Applications Folder on your MAC (My Assumption)

    2. Find your Utility Folder and open it.

    3. Double click on your Time Capsule app. (In my case it's called Airport Utility.app)

    4. Then at the top Menu Select Base Station.

    5. Then click on Manual Setup

    6. Then select Internet (Top Menu item of Box)

    7. Select TCP/IP

At this point you will need to wirte down the Following:

    1. IP address of your Time Capsule

    2. Subnet Mask

    3. Router IP address

    4. DNS Server(s) IP or IP addresses  *NOTE* The First Box is your Primary DNS Server and the Second box furthest to the right is your Secondary DNS Server IP address if you have a secondary.

    **IMPORTANT**  Don't change anything!!

Just Select Airport Utility at the Top and Select Quit.

Now go to your ATV2 or 1

and Manually input those items into your ATV2 or 1 Internet settings and save (Directions provided on an earlier post.

Please note If the settings in your ATV2 or 1 match the IP addresses you wrote down then the problem probably exist somewhere else.  Let me know if this works for you.

    Hi IG

I did it thru the PC but I have a pc not a mca - I am using wif thru a Cysco router which according to Cysco gets unhappy when the VP6 is enabled in windows. The box is part of a long list under options in the Local Area Connection file. Finding the file was a challenge but once located its easy. Plus its still appears to be working very well.

    Hi Deketele

I was in your camp until we got this working and it now appears to be almost instant.

The research I did is that  Apple don't care - even with 40 pages of problems the matter is insignificant compared to the number sold. I have asked outright several times if the Apple servers are the problem and either because they have an automated response system (i.e. there is not a real person actually answering your emails - they just attache links) or because in some case it actually is the Apple server they have not responded.

Where folks report a problem of the delays getting worse each time (someone yesterday was 246 hours) it leads me to belive it is a router problem as it gets more and more backed up over time. I have no evidence to support this but that's what was happening to us.

My ISP has assured us that in Canada they are very sensitive to choking and that it is illegal and since we or the neighborhood had no other problems that would point to that I focused on the router after doing a quick check in the local community if others with ATV were having similar problems. Some were having Netflix delay issues but I understand that that is a different download technology.

The local Geek Squad were happy to comein and take a crack - they also confirmed in preliminary discussions that the problem was likely to be with our set up.

    Hope this helps

Mine was working perfectly up until about a week and a half ago when 4.4.4 came out.  Now at 45 minute show on netflix takes atleast an hour to watch due to all the interruptions.  It's like commercial breaks without the commercials.  I haven't had too many issues with playing music and movies from my iphone or mac which is good.  Apple seems to be keeping quiet but I'm not sure all this is going unnoticed.  If you look at the number of 4.4 software updates they have released since october I would say they know they have issues to fix, though they seem to be having trouble actually fixing them.  I really hope they get it together, like many the main reason I bought the apple tv was to watch netflix without having the hookup my laptop to the tv.  Also does anyone know how to get your Mac to stop responding to the ATV remote?  I can't find anything in the pref/settings folder that looks applicable.

I think it's something that needs fixing from both parties. For the other, go into system preferences - security and disable the infrared receiver

    I fixed my problem!

I haven't had time to read thru this mammoth thread entirely but I have read many others describing several fixes.

I tried many solutions like changing router channel, adjusting TCP/IP settings, checking speeds, etc, but what worked for me was simply switching locations of the AppleTV2 box.

I first moved it 2 ft to the side and noticed no change.  My movie loading time was still 3 hrs.  Then I tried moving it 2 ft in front of the TV.  I left the room for 10 minutes or so came back and still 3 hrs.  I used the remote to go back to Settings just to look around more.  I didn't change anything.  I returned back to the Movie section and clicked Play on the movie one more time. The wheel started spinning and it still said Loading.  30 seconds later it switched to Authorizing and suddenly the movie was on.

It's too late to watch the movie now so hopefully it will still be there in the morning.

I know this seems pretty random and I may be talking out of my arse here, but try moving your box around and away from the TV or anything else.  Also give it some time to adjust in the new position.

    Worked for me.

Hey Vincent, sorry so late of a response on my end.  I tried inputting the numbers from my time machine and the apple tv wouldn't connect at all with them.  An update though...  If I restart my time machine during late hours (before 8am Eastern time) I get instant streaming again.  After around 8am Eastern time it doesn't work restarting my Time Machine.  seems like it is.  8am Eastern Time is the middle of the night my time so it isn't like it's my IP slowing down, more like Apple's servers getting backed up.  So it is probably a 2 way problem.  1 is Apples servers are not the best for streaming and the second being my Time Machine (apple product) is slowing down from my apple tv (another APPLE product).  You'd think those two would be compatible! Hahaha
