Apple TV 2nd Generation slow streaming for Movies from my iTunes

Just taken delivery of a 2nd Generation AppleTV. Everything works but when selecting a movie from my iTunes library it takes a very, very long time before it plays. I can fast forward and reverse but cannot play. Sometimes it takes 15 to 20 minutes before I can play it. Is there anything I can do to improve this? I could go and get the DVD and play it in my DVD player much faster than this.

Hey there -- and I do apologize if this is a repeat -- but I hope everyone has tried simply restarting AppleTV. After I brought my new AppleTV and installed the software update, I was experiencing EXTREMELY slow times for Home Sharing and even lagging and issues in Hulu when it had worked fine when I had first tried it out. However, once I restarted it, it was right as rain. So if you guys are new AppleTV users and, like me, sought out the forums before restarting the Apple TV... it really could be that easy.

... Also, if you are on a 2.4 Ghz network, you may find that the Apple TV runs into interference from the microwave. It does not matter if your router is on a fixed vs automatic channel or not. That reminds me, once the Apple TV and your Mac has a static ip, choose a fixed channel your router will broadcast at. And yes, restarting everything every time does work, but that gets tedious after a while...

Hi! I had the same problem-very slow streaming movies on iTunes via my Apple TV- using even an Ethernet connection with my ATV. Using www.speedtest.net, my Donwload speed was fine (19Mbps, but my Upload speed seemed to be causing slowness in streaming (Upload of only .13 Mbps!!!! I'm using an Airport Extreme.

So, I found this link to change my ethernet settings manually within my aiport extreme

http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/69745/airport-extreme-slow-upload-via-e thernet-but-fast-via-wireless

and it works great even huge movie file (blue ray rips) on iTunes. Now my upload speed is 2.05 Mbps.

I hope this helps those who are having this problem and have the aiport extreme router. Version 7.61.

I also added portforwading for Apple TV TCP 123 UDP-3869 and gave my Apple TV a manual IP address.

Problem: Streaming content FROM an iTunes Library located on a computer TO an Apple TV 2 (ATV2) is extremely slow. This can range anywhere from unusable to intermittent latency.

Resolution: I don't believe Apple has acknowledged the issue (please correct me if I am wrong). Some people have said that changing certain settings on their Apple brand router worked for them, but I believe this could be a seperate issue. Many have indicated they have various types of routers with standard setups and the problem persists.

Since this has been going on for a while with no confirmation from Apple, my solution will be to go buy a Roku and never look back. I have spent far too many hours pulling my hair out on this. Bye Apple!

I had exactly the same behavior, and here is how I fixed it.

I tried almost every advice I found on the web with no result and in the end I tried to modify the encryption of the wifi from WPA2-PSK-TKIP-AES256 to WPA2-PSK-TKIP.

After that I could watch three episodes of my tv program and they've started in less than 5 seconds (with no interruption while playing).

I did it yesterday, so I don't know if it's been fixed,

but I hope so! :)

Here's my two cents, hope this help.

Bye

Dave

This move from WPA2 to WPA/WPA2 Personal seemed to improve the network speeds. I have no firewall internal to the house and the appropriate QoS to iTunes opened up. We shall see I suppose how long this lasts...

btw Airport Extreme, latest firmware 7.6.3, iTunes 11.0.2.25, and ATV2 5.2.1 (6025). Although it's persisted for a couple versions since iTunes 11.0 era.

I have two 3rd generation ATV. One is close to the router/modem (Motorola SBG 6580) and streams fine. The other is brand new and is further away (40 ft) from the router. Initially the unit would connect to the network (4/5 bars) but streaming content on my iMac was extremely slow to load if it loaded/buffered at all. I had the same issue when I connected it to Airport Express via ethernet. (Airplay music seems to work better with the AE so I'm leaving that in series for now.)

After reading this thread, I tried three things that in combination seem to have fixed the problem.

1. Used iStumbler (free) to look at the surrounding networks and picked a channel that was in use (or used lightly).

2. Updated the ATV firmware

3. Modified the keychain access to "allow all applications to access this item" (the item being the network). Here's how I did #3:

search “keychain access” in finder, click on it

navigate to System-(Network Name)

right-click - “get info”

click “Access Control” tab

click “Allow all applications to access this item”

(you will need to enter your admin username/password along the way)

It worked better specifically after I did #3. It takes about 30-45 sec to start streaming blu-ray rips that are on my iMac.

Recent Apple TV user and I have to say this is by far the WORST apple product experience I've ever had....reminds me of early Microsoft days. All downloads start but eventually stop or pause unbearably long.

Definitely Apple TV issue as

1 Netflix works fine on wii and Xbox 1

2 trailers works fine on iPad

3 thought it might be wifi so switched to Ethernet connection to no avail

ANY advice appreciated but I find it hard to believe that this is an apple product!

WOW what a huge disappointment.

Thanks
