Apple TV 2nd Generation slow streaming for Movies from my iTunes

Just taken delivery of a 2nd Generation AppleTV. Everything works but when selecting a movie from my iTunes library it takes a very, very long time before it plays. I can fast forward and reverse but cannot play. Sometimes it takes 15 to 20 minutes before I can play it. Is there anything I can do to improve this? I could go and get the DVD and play it in my DVD player much faster than this.

I am experiencing the same issues with streaming content from my itunes library. I have tried many different"fixes" such as unplugging, hard restart (factory). Anyways, the stream will eventually fix itself (20-30 mins) but it is frustrating to deal with. Apple needs to fix this as soon as possible.

I am having the exact solar problem. I bought the current version of apple TV with the intent of watching videos from my computer on my TV. Now videos will not load or will take 10 minutes to load a small fraction of the video. This has been occurring for approximately a month now. I am very disappointed as I am an avid Apple product supporter. I have tried resetting everything, and nothing has worked. Even switching the security of wireless from WPA dual to WPA personal. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Let's hope Apple fixes this promptly.

I too have the same above problems. I've tried the various solutions suggested here with no success. Even now I'm waiting for a movie to load . . .over an hour now. I havent been able to watch a movie when I wanted it since the last updates Apple, you are starting to remind me of my days dealing with Microsoft products that don't do what they say and the problems don't get fixed unless I spend even more money. . . . .

I'm tired of troubleshooting, re-setting up my network from scratch, unplugging things, thinking about this, dealing with this, and telling my coworkers, friends, and family who rely on me for sound computer advice to go with Apple. I'm going to be very upset the first time I have to bring a third party piece of junk in my house because the Apple product I have doesn't work as advertised . . . . .

I appologize for the rant, but I'm a very frustrated, -been waiting patiently for months now on these message boards - waiting for an Apple rep to give us a fix or even a plausible reason this is happening.

I 100% agree with you. I see how many people in various Apple Forums say they trade in their ATV2 for a new one - and the new one works, but what kind of a resolution is that? There are obviously issues ATV2 routinely encounters - dropping networks for no reason and slow streaming being two common issues - and we never hear about a fix from Apple.

I ran into the same problem, but seem to have fixed it (at least for me).

The fix: Updated the Airport Extreme (if you have one) firmware to the newest Update 7.6...

Background: I have a second gen Apple TV that I bought about a year ago but sat in the box until just recently when I installed it. As part of the install, I updated to the newest AppleTV software. My new computer was using the newest iTunes software. But Homeshare and Airplay worked extremely slow. It would take 10 minutes to load a 30-min TV episode stored on my computer's hard drive, and it would have to stop and buffer for a few minutes at the halfway mark, 3/4 mark, and then several times during the last few minutes of the episode.

What I tried: I run AppleTV over an Apple Airport Extreme wireless network. So tried downloading and installing the newest version of Apple's Airport Utility program (currently AirPort Utility 5.5.3) from Apple's website at http://support.apple.com/downloads/#airport. From there, I used the utility to connect to my Airport Extreme and update my Airport Extreme's software to the newest version (currently AirPort Base Station and Time Capsule Firmware Update 7.6). The write-up mentions fixing a bug with AirPlay, though not the bug mentioned here. Gave it a shot. The Airport Extreme installed the new software and rebooted itself.

Just before the update to 7.6, I tried Airplay and it was the usual slow, 10 minutes to even get a picture on the screen.

Right after the update to 7.6, I tried Airplay and the picture came up instantly on the screen, started playing the episode immediately, and the *entire* TV episode buffered in FULL within 2-3 minutes.

That's a pretty big jump in performance.

Also, just tried out Homeshare with a full 2 hour movie and works it just as fast (1/5th the movie had buffered in about 1 minute). I can say that the AppleTV is now working fast / as advertised with respect to streaming Movies from iTunes via homeshare/airplay. Definitely frustrating before this.

I did a few other things (connect AppleTV via ethernet cable, and restore the AppleTV) but it was still slow until I did the 7.6 update. I think Airport Extreme 7.6 would be a good thing to check and make sure you have updated in addition to the usual, latest iTunes, latest AppleTV software.

Having the exact same problem. Trying to watch movies and can't. 2 hours to download...so I have to time my movie watching, what's up with that? Isn't the point of this for convenience. Also, my timer is going on the rental and a may not get to watch it. I'm sitting here with my popcorn...back to Netflix.

Very unhappy and I want my money back for the 2 movies I rented this weekend. Would've been easier to rent a DVD.

Like many other people it seems, I'm having the problem of very slow streaming of movies (particularly HD movies) from my MacBook to my Apple TV 2G. In my case, my home network consists of two Airport Expresses - one connected to my incoming internet service, and the other set up as a network extender.

I've tried most everything to fix the streaming performance problem, and finally stumbled on the solution - I just unplug the 2nd Airport Express. This instantly fixes the problem - movies stream fine, everything works correctly. The only downside is that I then don't have WIFI in part of my house. urf.

Same issue for me. I purchased Season 4 of Breaking Bad thinking it'd be as painless to watch as the other three seasons were on Netflix. Not so -- "1 hour 22 minutes to go..." "1 hour 57 minutes to go..." "1 hour 59 minutes to go..." And so on. Really feels like 1986 and I'm downloading a game with my 300 baud modem. I will be getting a refund for my purchase and waiting for it to hit Netflix in July.

Wow, just experienced this issue last night when attempting to rent a movie. Took one stab at a search and came up with this thread!

I must say I've been dissatisfied with this product since I bought it, but decided to live with it until now. I assumed that I was in for some network or other troubleshooting work last night, but I see that the ATV2 is just a failure in the Apple product line as far as I can tell.

I will be shipping mine back to Amazon today and looking for another vendor.
