Rapid Scrolling, Press/Hold Not Working

I also posted this query/anomaly in the set-up discussions area...

I am having lots of problems with the Apple TV + remote. The "Press/Hold Select Button for more options" feature while playing songs does not work. All it does is stop the song - just like play/pause. In fact, none of the "hold" settings on the remote control work. For the initial setup I was able to fast scroll through the alphabet in setting up my account. Now whenever I try to rapid scroll through anything, it is one cursor move per click - holding the button will never move the cursor more than one position.

I have restored the Apple TV/updated its software and reset to factory settings - no change in this errant behavior.

Any suggestions? Quite frustrating!

Mine works for all the functions you describe however I have found it a bit difficult to keep the proper button held down. They're to close for me. I've found the remote2 app for the iPad/iphone to be a much easier way to control the tv. Give the app a try, it's free. 😉

Thanks for the reply. After talking to tech support and taking into the Apple Store, they decided to take it back. A 3rd party remote had the same anomaly so they assumed it was probably the head unit, particularly since two factory resets and two restores had no effect on the problem. I see another poster had/has the same anomaly. Hope they don't have too many units like this.

I spoke too soon - problem not solved. Got replacement unit and out of the box it is exhibiting the same problem - only one cursor move at a time, and no "press and hold" functionality for play/pause, select, etc.

Are others having this problem?

Yes, I'm having this exact problem. Have tried factory reset, but didn't work. To go from option to option, I had to keep clicking the button on the remote. Have tried using other remotes (same problem), and also have tried the remote on my Gen1 ATV (works like a charm).

Am planning to go back to the store to see if I can get the main unit replaced... will let you know how it goes 😟

I notice that when I first start things up the rapid scrolling will work - but that only lasts a few minutes. Very buggy...

same problem here. setting up ATV2 for the first time was a mess and now, having an iPhone and an iPad, I'm using the Remote App since the supplied remote freezes too often.

I am having this exact problem and just posted about here yesterday. The press and hold feature worked on my original ATV2, which Apple replaced because it didn't work properly. The original remote didn't work properly with the replacement ATV2 and Apple replaced it. Same problem.

Here's the kicker: the remote works fine with my friend's ATV2. And when I have brought my ATV2 to his house or my parents' house, my remote works fine when connected to their TVs.

I'm heading down to the Apple Store today with the unit and the remote to see if they have any answers. I've tried resetting, restoring, pairing, unpairing, and a few other things Apple Support has instructed me to do when I've called. It will work occasionally but that's it.

Any solution? I have the same issue and the scrolling through radio stations take forever and cant add any to my now blank favorite list since restore didn't fix it.

Hi, I've experienced the same problem this week with my new Apple TV and I've changed to another HDMI connector (My TV has 3) and now Quick Scroll works perfect!!! I hope that helps you...

i had the problems and searched the WHOLE EARTH CATALOG 😉 and didnt found the answer. but i have found it.

i had changed the appletv video settings to output in 1080p 50hz. if you change it back to 1080p 60hz, then you will have smooth scrolling, and the press and hold effekt and reordering the apps on the homescreen will work again.
