Appleworks stops responding after initial startup

Having trouble running Appleworks 6.2.9 on Mac OS 10.3.9. When I start Appleworks it loads as normal and displays the starting points window. If I then click on any of the menus or the starting points window Appleworks stops responding and displays the coloured beach ball for a couple of minutes. After this it does carry the action out but continues to stop respondng each time you click or type anything.

I have tried removing the preferances files and re-installing Appleworks from the CD to no avail.

Help!

G5 uniprocessor Mac OS X (10.3.9)

There is a subfolder in your AppleWorks folder, named
"Recent Items".

Many thanks for your reply. I haven't been able to find 'Recent items' yet, and am not quite sure what you mean by my AppleWorks folder. Should this be under 'Applications' on the HD? That's what I assumed, and it doesn't seem to be there. I've tried 'library', too, without success.
